Chapter 6 - THE DAWN OVER CHICAGO

By 6:00 a.m., the snowstorm had cleared, leaving the streets of downtown Chicago blanketed in a pristine, blinding layer of white.
Inside the private office on the forty-eighth floor of Westbridge Tower, the atmosphere was entirely different. The city outside was waking up, golden morning light reflecting off the frozen surface of the Chicago River.
Claire Bennett sat at her immaculate desk. Her cream-colored blouse had been replaced by a fresh one, though a faint, pale bruise still lingered near her left temple. Her laptop was open, displaying the finalized, legally binding papers for the Dawson acquisition—now officially scrubbed of any syndicate influence, secured under a clean, unblemished corporate trust.
The heavy mahogany door clicked open.
Adrian walked in. He was wearing a fresh charcoal suit, his dark hair neatly combed, holding two paper cups of black coffee. He set one down gently on Claire’s desk without a word.
"The federal task force released their preliminary statement an hour ago," Claire said quietly, looking up from her screen. "Julian has been formally charged with corporate fraud, racketeering, and conspiracy. The board members who voted for the takeover have resigned en masse."
"And Viktor Vance?" Adrian asked, taking a slow sip of his coffee.
"Back behind bars where he belongs," Claire replied, a faint smile touching the corners of her lips. "The old guard is completely finished this time. No remnants left."
Adrian nodded slowly, leaning against the edge of her desk. He looked down at her bruised wrists, where a soft silk bandage now covered the skin.
"How is your arm?" he asked, his voice uncharacteristically gentle.
"It hurts," Claire admitted honestly. "But it'll heal."
"You saved this company last night, Claire," Adrian said, looking directly into her eyes. "More than that—you saved whatever soul was left of the Vale name. I misjudged you thinking you were just an executive secretary. From now on, your position in this firm is whatever you want it to be. Name your title. Name your terms."
Claire looked down at the coffee cup, then back up at her boss. A subtle, confident spark lit up her eyes—the exact same spark that had kept Vale Meridian Holdings afloat through a thousand corporate crises.
"I don't need a new title, Mr. Vale," Claire said smoothly, picking up her pen. "Just make sure the coffee machine in the executive lounge is never empty again."

Adrian let out a rare, genuine laugh—a deep, resonant sound that chased away the last lingering shadows of the night.
"Consider it done."
