Chapter 5 - The High-Speed Pursuit through Polanco

A desperate escape, a betrayal from within, and a crash that changed everything. As Valeria burst through the heavy fire doors into the concrete parking garage, her heels clicked loudly against the floor.

She ripped the heavy diamonds from her neck, throwing them aside.

"Valeria!"

She spun around. Standing near the elevators was Alejandro. But he wasn't alone. Three heavily armed men in dark suits stood behind him.

"You really thought you could play me?" Alejandro said, his charming facade completely gone, replaced by a cold, calculating malice. "I’ve known you were snooping around since Valle de Bravo. Did you really think my sister Natalia was on your side?"

Valeria froze. "What?"

From behind the armed men, Natalia stepped out. Her tearful, victimized expression was gone. She was holding a sleek leather clutch, looking at Valeria with a mixture of pity and contempt.

"I’m sorry, Valeria," Natalia said smoothly. "But family comes first. And more importantly, money comes first. The Kramarenko girl was getting greedy. She had to go. Alejandro promised me her share of the Monterrey logistics accounts if I helped him clean up the mess. And the mess... is you."

"You monstrous psychopaths," Valeria spat, backing away toward the ramp.

"The dress looks beautiful on you, Valeria," Alejandro said, drawing a silenced pistol from his tuxedo jacket. "It’s going to look even better when they find you in it, at the bottom of the lake in Valle de Bravo. A tragic suicide brought on by the guilt of your financial crimes."

"Run!" a voice suddenly screamed from the shadows.

A black SUV tore around the corner of the parking garage, tires screeching. It was the investigative journalist Valeria had contacted.

The SUV rammed into one of Alejandro's guards, sending him flying.

Valeria didn't hesitate. She threw herself into the passenger seat of the SUV just as Alejandro fired. A bullet shattered the side mirror, spraying glass everywhere.

"Go! Go!" Valeria screamed.

The SUV roared out of the parking garage and onto the rainy streets of Polanco. Behind them, two black luxury sedans immediately gave chase, weaving violently through the heavy November traffic of Paseo de la Reforma.
