Chapter 2 - The Shadow of the Past

"Stay behind me," Jack commanded, his CEO instincts instantly taking over as he stood up, placing his broad frame between the approaching stranger and Emma’s terrified family.

The man stopped just two feet from the table, adjusting his tailored cuffs. Up close, he exuded an aura of immense wealth and calculation. He looked at Jack, evaluating him like a piece of real estate he intended to buy.

"Well, well," the man said, his voice smooth and dripping with condescension. "I must admit, Emma, I didn't expect to find you hiding in a place like Bellamy’s. And certainly not with the illustrious Jack Brennan."

"Victor," Emma spat, her voice a mix of deep fear and intense hatred. "Get away from us. You have no right to be here."

Jack stepped closer, his eyes narrowing into slits. "I don't know who you are, buddy, but you're interrupting my dinner. Walk away before I have security throw you out."

Victor let out a soft, mocking laugh. "Security? My dear Jack, I don't think you understand the situation. I am Victor Vance. Founder of Vance Global Dynamics. And more importantly, I am Emma’s former employer... and the rightful legal guardian of that little girl sitting behind you."

The restaurant seemed to go completely silent. Jack felt a jolt of shock run through him, but his expression remained a mask of stone. He glanced back at Emma, who was holding Lily tightly against her chest, tears streaming down her face.

"He's lying, Jack!" Emma cried. "He's trying to steal her! He’s been hunting us for six months!"

"Lying?" Victor pulled a pristine leather document folder from his breast pocket, tossing it casually onto the white tablecloth. "Check the court order, Brennan. Emma was a senior researcher at my firm. She signed a highly binding proprietary contract regarding an experimental genetic data project. More importantly, she signed away parental rights during a dark period of her life three years ago when she was facing severe financial ruin and legal trouble—a period I graciously funded her through."

Jack didn't touch the folder. He kept his eyes locked on Victor. "This is a restaurant, Vance. If you have a legal dispute, take it up with her lawyers on Monday. Right now, you're harassing my guests."

"It's not a dispute if it's already settled," Victor replied smoothly, stepping forward to look past Jack at Lily. "Hello, Lily. Ready to come home to the big house?"

Lily buried her face in Emma’s blazer, sobbing silently.

Jack’s patience snapped. He reached out, grabbing Victor by the lapels of his expensive suit, slamming him back against a nearby pillar. The sudden violence caused a nearby table of diners to gasp.

"Listen to me carefully, Vance," Jack growled, his voice low and lethal, vibrating with a rage he hadn't felt in a decade. "I don't care who you are or what paperwork you have in that pocket. If you step within ten feet of this woman or this child again tonight, I will use every resource, every lawyer, and every dollar at my disposal to ruin your company by sunrise. Do you understand me?"

Victor’s eyes widened in brief surprise, but the arrogance quickly returned. He raised his hands defensively. "A bit dramatic for a first date, don't you think, Jack? Fine. Protect her tonight. But you should ask your lovely date exactly what she stole from my lab before she ran away. Ask her about the 'Starlight Project.' Let's see if you're still playing the white knight when you find out she's a fugitive."

With a final, malicious glance at Emma, Victor straightened his suit, turned on his heel, and walked out of the restaurant into the rainy night.

Jack stood breathing heavily, his fists still clenched. He turned back to the booth. Emma was trembling so hard she could barely hold her water glass. The restaurant manager was rushing over, looking panicked.

Jack waved the manager away with a sharp gesture, then slid into the booth next to Emma, putting a supportive arm around her shaking shoulders.

"We need to get out of here," Jack said firmly. "We're going to my house. It has top-tier security. You'll both be safe there."

Emma looked up at him, her eyes red and filled with guilt. "Jack... you heard what he said. I can't involve you in this. He is dangerous. He will destroy your reputation."

"My reputation can handle it," Jack said fiercely, lifting Lily into his arms. The little girl immediately wrapped her arms around his neck, holding on for dear life. "Let's go."
