Chapter 5 - The Trap at the Docks

The rain had turned into a torrential downpour by the time Jack’s armored SUV pulled up to the abandoned industrial district by the harbor. The warehouse was a looming, rusted structure surrounded by cracked asphalt and decaying shipping containers.

Jack pulled a sleek, compact firearm from the glove compartment, checking the magazine before tucking it into his belt. Emma looked at it, her breath catching.

"I didn't think CEOs carried guns," she whispered.

"I grew up in a rough neighborhood before my dad made his first million, Emma," Jack said quietly. "I learned early that you never go into a fight unprepared."

They slipped through a broken side door, their footsteps echoing softly in the cavernous, dark space. The interior was filled with the low, continuous hum of server racks glowing with eerie blue and green LED lights. In the center of the room was a makeshift command terminal.

Emma rushed to the console, pulling a flash drive from her pocket and plugging it in. "I'm initiating the data override. If I can upload my decryption key, it will force his system to broadcast the illegal human trial records directly to the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice."

"How long?" Jack asked, his eyes scanning the shadows of the warehouse.

"Four minutes," Emma said, her eyes glued to the progress bar. "Just four minutes."

"I'm afraid you don't have four minutes, my dear," a cultured, mocking voice echoed from the darkness above.

Floodlights suddenly snapped on, blinding them. Jack threw his arm up to shield his eyes. When his vision cleared, he saw Victor Vance standing on an iron catwalk above them, flanked by four heavily armed private security guards.

"You really are a fool, Jack," Victor laughed, looking down at them. "Did you really think I didn't know Emma would trace the signal here? I wanted you to come. In fact, I needed you to come."

Jack stepped in front of Emma, his hand moving slowly toward his belt. "It’s over, Vance. The legal teams are already moving. Your company is done."

"Is it?" Victor smiled sinisterly. "You see, Jack, what Emma didn't tell you—or perhaps what she didn't realize—is that the 'Starlight Project' isn't just a genetic algorithm. It’s a predictive behavior AI. I didn't just hack your company tonight to hurt your stock. I used the distraction to initiate a hostile, automated takeover of Brennan Technologies."

Jack’s heart skipped a beat. "What?"

"While you were busy playing hero, my automated shell corporations bought up 51% of your public stock at a heavily manipulated, depressed price," Victor explained, his eyes gleaming with malicious triumph. "As of ten minutes ago, Jack Brennan, you are no longer the CEO of Brennan Technologies. I own your company. I own your father's legacy. And by tomorrow morning, I will own everything you have ever touched."

Emma gasped, looking at Jack in absolute horror. "Jack... oh god, no... I’m so sorry..."

Jack felt a wave of crushing defeat wash over him. The company his father had built above a hardware store, the legacy he had sacrificed his entire life and every personal relationship to protect, was gone in a single night. All because he had decided to go on a blind date.

"Now," Victor said, gesturing to his guards, who raised their weapons, pointing them directly at Jack and Emma. "Hand over the master drive, Emma. And Jack... thank you for the company. You can leave now. Dead or alive, it doesn't matter to me."

The progress bar on Emma’s terminal hit 75%.

Jack looked at the screen, then looked up at Victor. A strange, unexpected feeling washed over him. For the first time in his life, looking at the loss of his multi-million-dollar empire, he didn't feel broken. He looked at Emma, who was willing to die to protect her daughter, and he realized something profound.

Brennan Technologies was just glass and silicon.

This woman, and the little girl waiting for them in the tower, were real.

Jack offered a slow, deliberate smile that caused Victor’s grin to falter.

"You think you won, Victor?" Jack said, his voice echoing in the vast warehouse. "You forgot one crucial thing about Brennan Technologies."

"And what’s that?" Victor sneered.

"I didn't build my company on software," Jack said fiercely. "I built it on infrastructure. Marcus—NOW!"
