Chapter 5 - THE BOARDROOM AMBUSH

Hook: “The doors swung open, and the ghosts came marching in.”The top floor of the Hail International Tower was buzzing with tension. The twenty members of the board of directors sat around a massive glass table, speaking in hushed, nervous whispers.
At the head of the table sat Evelyn Hail, looking victorious. Her lawyers stood behind her, ready with the paperwork to transfer absolute control of the multi-billion-dollar empire into her hands.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Evelyn announced, her voice echoing off the glass walls. "It is a tragedy what has happened to my son. Richard’s mental health has completely deteriorated. His erratic behavior and the recent criminal charges have made it clear he can no longer lead this company. I ask for your vote to appoint me as Chairperson and CEO, effective immediately."
"I object," a voice boomed from the back of the room.
The heavy glass double doors swung open.
Evelyn’s breath hitched.
Richard walked in. He wasn't wearing a rumpled, fugitive outfit. He was wearing a bespoke, midnight-blue Tom Ford suit. He looked every bit the powerful, ruthless titan that had dominated the corporate world for a decade.
But he wasn't alone.
Walking beside him, dressed in matching, tailored miniature suits, were Arthur, Thomas, Charles, and David. Behind them stood Lena and Marcus, flanked by a dozen heavily armed state police officers.
The boardroom erupted into chaos. Directors stood up, gasping, pointing at the four identical boys who looked exactly like a young Richard Hail.
"Richard!" Evelyn hissed, her face turning a ghastly shade of pale. "Security! Remove this madman and these children!"
"The security guards answer to me now, mother," Richard said smoothly, walking to the opposite end of the glass table. The four boys stood in a perfect, disciplined line beside him, their slate-gray eyes staring down the woman who had imprisoned them.
Richard slammed the vanilla envelope onto the table. "Five years ago, this board was told that my sons died in childbirth. You were told that the Hail bloodline was down to a single, grieving man. It was a lie manufactured by the woman sitting at the head of this table."
He threw copies of the original birth certificates across the glass. They slid perfectly in front of each director.
"Evelyn Hail faked the deaths of my children. She sealed empty coffins. She imprisoned the rightful heirs to this company in a dilapidated cottage on my estate, hiding them like animals to protect her own grip on power and prevent the restructuring of the family trust."
"This is an fabrication!" Evelyn screamed, her voice cracking with desperation, a sound the board had never heard from her before. "He’s insane! Those are actors! Orphans he bought!"
"The state police forensics team just finished excavating the Oakridge Cemetery vault, Evelyn," Richard said, his voice dropping to a terrifying chill. "They found the bricks you used to simulate the weight of my dead babies. And right now, the district attorney is reviewing the DNA evidence linking these four boys directly to me and Clara."
The directors looked at the documents, then at the boys, and finally at Evelyn with absolute horror. The scandal she had spent five years trying to prevent had just exploded in her face, in front of the very people she sought to control.
"You're finished, mother," Richard said softly.
The lead state police officer stepped forward, pulling a pair of handcuffs from his belt. "Evelyn Hail, you are under arrest for child endangerment, kidnapping, fraud, and conspiracy."
As the handcuffs clicked around her wrinkled wrists, Evelyn stared at Richard, her eyes filled with venom. "You think you've won, Richard? You've destroyed the company! The stock will crash to zero by noon! You’ve ruined us!"
"I don't care about the stock price," Richard said, looking down at his sons. "I have my family back."

But as Evelyn was being led out of the room, she stopped by Richard, a sudden, twisted smile appearing on her face. She whispered something into his ear that made his heart stop completely.
"You think I did this alone? Ask your maid who paid her the second half of her salary every month, Richard. Ask her who really told me you were coming home early that Tuesday."
