Chapter 6 - THE TWISTED TRUTH

Hook: “The ultimate betrayal wasn't from an enemy—it was from the person he trusted most.”The boardroom cleared out. The directors fled to handle the impending PR nightmare, and Evelyn was driven away in the back of a police cruiser.
Richard sat in the empty boardroom, his four sons sitting quietly around him, drawing on corporate notepad paper with pens. Lena stood near the window, her back to him.
Richard felt a cold dread creeping up his spine. Evelyn’s final words.
"Lena," Richard said quietly.
She turned around, her face pale, her hands trembling. "Yes, Mr. Hail?"
"My mother said something before she left," Richard began, his eyes locked onto her. "She said she didn't act alone. She said someone tipped her off that I was coming home early on Tuesday afternoon. She said someone was being paid double."
Lena’s eyes welled with tears, but she didn't look away this time. "Your mother is a liar, sir."
"She is," Richard agreed. "But she’s a proud liar. She wouldn't share credit for a crime unless she was forced to." Richard stood up, walking toward Lena. "I checked my phone logs from that Tuesday. The investor didn't cancel the meeting because of a delayed flight. His secretary told my assistant that they received an anonymous tip saying I had canceled the meeting due to a family emergency."
Richard stepped closer. "The only person who knew I was working on that specific corporate folder at home... was the person who helped me pack my briefcase the night before. You, Lena."
Lena took a step back, her back hitting the glass window. The tears were streaming down her face now. "Mr. Hail, I swear—"
"Why were they in the dining room, Lena?" Richard’s voice was a cracked whisper of pure heartbreak. "You told me they were hungry. You told me you found them in the trash. But the front gate security cameras showed you bringing them through the main entrance an hour before I arrived. You wanted me to find them."
Lena let out a ragged sob, dropping to her knees. "I had to, Richard! I had to!"
The four boys stopped drawing, looking up at Lena in confusion.
"Explain," Richard commanded, the exact same word he had used in the dining room three days ago.
"Five years ago, I was a nurse at the hospital," Lena confessed, her voice shaking. "I was young, drowning in medical debt. Evelyn Hail approached me. She offered me a million dollars to sign the fake death certificates and help move the babies to the cottage. I was terrified, and I took the money."
Richard felt a fresh wave of nausea. The maid he had trusted, the woman who had 'saved' his sons, was one of the original architects of their torment.
"But then... I saw what they were becoming," Lena cried, clutching her chest. "Over the years, Evelyn became more cruel. She was planning to eliminate three of them permanently by their sixth birthday. I couldn't let her do it. I grew to love them. But I knew if I just went to the police, Evelyn would use her power to destroy the evidence and kill me."
She looked up at Richard, her eyes desperate. "I needed you to see them. I needed the ruthless, powerful Richard Hail to wake up from his grief and fight for them. I engineered the canceled meeting. I brought them into the dining room. I put them in your clothes. I knew the birthmark would force you to face the truth. I had to make you a father again so you would destroy Evelyn."
Richard stared at her, the complexity of human nature crashing down on him. She was a criminal who had taken money to steal his children, but she was also the savior who had risked her life to bring them back to him.
"You lied to me," Richard said.
"I saved your sons," Lena whispered. "Do what you have to do with me. Put me in jail with your mother. I don't care. Just look at them. They are safe now."
Richard looked back at the table. Arthur, Thomas, Charles, and David were watching him. Arthur stood up, walked over, and took Richard’s hand.
"Don't be sad, Daddy," the little boy said, using the word for the very first time. "We’re together now."
The corporate empire of Hail International would face a massive storm. Stock prices would drop, legal battles would last for years, and the family name would forever be associated with a dark, gothic conspiracy.
But as Richard looked down at his four sons, pulling them into a tight, fierce embrace, he realized the museum of his grief was finally demolished. For the first time in five years, the Hail Estate wasn't filled with the silence of the dead.
