Chapter 2 - THE ESCAPE FROM THE GOLDEN CAGE

Viral Hook: "They called it a medical emergency. I called it a kidnapping. Tonight, I run from the people who claim to love me."

The needle was inches from Emily's skin when a sudden crash echoed through the ballroom.

Noah had grabbed a heavy silver champagne bucket from a nearby table and hurled it directly at Dr. Aris. The bucket struck the doctor's shoulder, sending the syringe flying and shattering against the marble floor.

"Run!" Noah yelled, scrambling to his feet despite the bruise blooming on his cheek.

But Emily couldn't run. She was trapped in the heavy, motorized wheelchair.

"The service elevator!" Noah shouted. He didn't wait for her permission. He grabbed the handles of her heavy wheelchair, flipped the manual release switch beneath the seat to bypass the electronic lock, and began sprinting, pushing her forward with all his strength.

"Stop them!" Julian’s voice roared behind them, devoid of any gentlemanly warmth. "Shut down the building! Do not let them leave!"

The ballroom erupted into pure chaos. High-society women screamed as Noah maneuvered the wheelchair through tables, knocking over towering ice sculptures and floral arrangements to create a barrier. The two guards chased close behind, but the crowd of panicked guests blocked their path.

Noah pushed Emily through the double doors of the kitchen. The kitchen staff stared in shock as a dirty, homeless youth pushed a million-dollar heiress past the roaring stoves and prep stations.

"In here!" Noah gasped, shoving the wheelchair into a massive, steel service elevator used for transporting heavy banquet carts. He hit the button for the basement level just as Dr. Aris and Julian burst into the kitchen.

Julian’s face appeared in the narrowing gap of the closing elevator doors. The mask was completely gone. His eyes were wide, bloodshot, and filled with a murderous rage.

"You won't survive the night, Noah!" Julian screamed before the steel doors slammed shut, cutting off his voice.

The elevator lurched downward. Inside the metallic box, the silence was deafening.

Emily was hyperventilating. Her hands clutched the old, bent photograph so tightly her knuckles turned white. Her mind was a war zone. Images of a dark, cold attic... the smell of damp concrete... a little boy sharing his half-eaten apple with her... and then, a sudden flash of blinding headlights and the sound of crushing metal.

"Noah," she whispered, her voice trembling. "What is happening to me? Who am I?"

Noah knelt in front of her, taking her shaking hands in his. His hands were rough, calloused, and cold, but to Emily, they felt like the only real thing in the world.

"Your name is Emily Vance, but you aren't who they say you are," Noah said quickly, watching the elevator floor indicator tick down. "Ten years ago, a lawyer came to the orphanage. They said you were the sole heir to the Vance family fortune after a distant relative died. You were supposed to leave and live in a mansion. But you didn't want to leave me. The night before they were supposed to take you, we tried to run away."

Emily’s eyes widened. "The accident..."

"It wasn't an accident," Noah said, his voice dropping to a whisper. "We were running along the highway. A black car chased us. It hit us both. I woke up in a ditch with a broken leg. When I went back to find you, they told me you were dead. They showed me a grave, Emily! But it was all a lie. They kept you alive because they needed you."

"Why?" Emily breathed. "Why keep me alive if they hate me?"

"Because of the Vance Will," Noah said as the elevator jolted to a halt. The doors began to slide open, revealing the dark, concrete labyrinth of the hotel's underground parking garage. "The inheritance only transfers to Julian if you die after your twenty-fifth birthday, or if you are declared mentally incompetent and he is your legal guardian. Your twenty-fifth birthday is tomorrow, Emily. If you regain your memory before midnight... he loses everything."

Suddenly, the headlights of a black SUV flickered to life at the far end of the garage.

The engine roared. It was Julian's personal security detail. They had anticipated the elevator.

Noah grabbed the wheelchair handles. "Hold on!"

He pushed her out into the cold, damp air of the garage, but the SUV was accelerating rapidly, its tires screeching against the concrete. They were trapped in an open lane with nowhere to hide.

Just as the SUV was about to cut them off, a battered, rusted yellow delivery van slammed into the side of the SUV, sending it spinning into a concrete pillar with a deafening crunch.

The door of the rusted van flew open. A middle-aged woman with tired eyes and grease-stained hands leaned out.

"Get in!" she screamed. "Quickly!"
