Chapter 5 - MIDNIGHT OF RECKONING

Viral Hook: "My fiancé was shot in front of me. Now, the real killer is pointing the gun at us, and the clock is ticking to midnight."

"Julian!" Emily cried out, despite everything he had done to her.

Julian lay on the floor, gasping for air, his eyes wide with the realization of his own stupidity. He had been manipulated by the very doctor he hired to control Emily.

Dr. Aris calmly re-aimed the pistol, pointing it directly at Noah's head. "Ten years of planning. Ten years of keeping this pathetic girl alive, waiting for her to reach twenty-five so the trust could be legally transferred to Julian—whom I controlled through blackmail. And you, a street rat, ruined it in a single evening."

"You won't get away with this, Aris," Noah spit, trying to stand, but the guard kicked him down again.

"I will," Aris said smoothly. "The warehouse is wired with thermite. In five minutes, this entire block will be a pile of ash. Julian, the tragic fiancé, died trying to save his mentally ill bride from a crazed, homeless stalker. It's a perfect story for the morning news."

Aris checked his watch.

11:55 PM.

"Goodbye, Noah," Aris said, his finger tightening on the trigger.

"Wait!" Emily screamed.

Using every ounce of strength in her newly awakened muscles, Emily dragged herself forward. She grabbed Julian’s discarded pen from the floor and, with a desperate, wild cry, drove it deep into the leg of the guard standing over Noah.

The guard screamed, dropping his rifle.

Noah didn't hesitate. He tackled the guard, sending them both crashing into a stack of wooden pallets.

Dr. Aris swung his gun toward Emily, but Sarah, who had been hiding in the shadows, threw a heavy metal wrench, striking Aris in the wrist. The gun fired wildly into the ceiling before clattering away into the darkness.

"Get Emily!" Noah shouted to Sarah as he struggled with the guard.

Emily felt a surge of adrenaline. The fire in her mind had fully cleared. She looked at her legs.

Walk, she told herself. You have to walk.

She grabbed the edge of a heavy worktable. With a gut-wrenching groan, she pulled herself up. Her knees wobbled violently. Her muscles screamed in protest. But she stood.

For the first time in three years, Emily Vance was standing on her own two feet.

"I'm standing, Noah!" she gasped.

But there was no time to celebrate. Dr. Aris had recovered his gun. He pointed it at Emily, his face twisted in psychotic rage. "If I can't have the fortune, no one will!"

BANG!

A shot echoed.

But it didn't come from Aris's gun.

Aris blinked, looking down at his chest. A small red dot blossomed on his shirt.

Behind him, Julian was lying in a pool of his own blood, holding a small, silver backup pistol he had kept in his ankle holster.

"You... used me..." Julian wheezed, his eyes glazing over as he fired one last shot before his hand went limp.

Aris collapsed to the floor, dead before he hit the ground.

The warehouse sirens began to wail. A red countdown timer on the wall, connected to the thermite charges, flashed:

00:30

00:29

"We have to go!" Noah yelled, breaking free from the unconscious guard. He ran to Emily, scooping her up in his arms as her legs finally collapsed from the strain. "I've got you. I've always got you."

They sprinted toward the exit, Sarah leading the way.

Behind them, the thermite charges ignited, white-hot flames erupting throughout the warehouse, consuming the dark secrets, the lies, and the bodies of the men who had stolen Emily's life.
