Chapter 3 - THE SECRET IN THE DOSSIER

Viral Hook: "I thought I was an orphan who got lucky. Turns out, my entire life was a medical experiment paid for by my fiancé."
The woman driving the van was Sarah, a former nurse who had worked at the private clinic where Emily was kept during her "rehabilitation" three years ago.
Now, they were hiding in the basement of an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of the city. Rain poured outside, drumming a relentless, anxious beat against the corrugated metal roof.
Noah was bandaging a cut on his arm, while Sarah adjusted a makeshift IV drip she had prepared for Emily.
"They've been drugging you, Emily," Sarah said, her voice filled with quiet anger. She held up a vial of clear liquid she had stolen from the hotel kitchen during the chaos. "This isn't medicine for your nerves. It's a high-dose synthetic amnestic mixed with a mild paralytic. It keeps your mind foggy, prevents neurogenesis—which is why you can't remember—and ensures your legs remain weak."
Emily stared at her legs. For three years, she had believed her paralysis was permanent, the result of severe spinal trauma. "You're saying... I can walk?"
"The physical damage healed years ago," Sarah said, kneeling to gently squeeze Emily's calf. "But the drugs they give you every day keep your muscles chemically sedated. If you stop taking them, the paralytic will wear off. But the withdrawal will be excruciating. Your brain will flood with ten years of blocked memories all at once. It could cause a stroke."
"I don't care," Emily said, tears spilling over her eyelashes. "I want my mind back. I want my life back."
Noah walked over and took her hand. "I'm right here, Em. I won't let them touch you again."
"There's more," Sarah said, pulling a thick, water-damaged manila folder from her bag. "I stole this from Dr. Aris's private safe before I was fired. Julian isn't just trying to steal your inheritance. He's the one who caused the 'accident' ten years ago."
Emily opened the folder. Inside were old police reports, medical files, and financial statements.
As she scanned the documents, the truth unfolded like a horror movie.
Julian’s father had been the trustee of the Vance estate. When the true heir—Emily—was discovered at the orphanage, Julian's family faced financial ruin. If Emily claimed the fortune, their embezzling would be exposed.
So, Julian's father orchestrated the car chase to eliminate Emily. But she survived, albeit with severe memory loss. Instead of killing her, Julian realized a loophole: if he married her, or became her permanent guardian due to mental incompetence, he would gain legal control of the entire Vance empire.
But there was a terrifying clause in the will.
“If the heir, Emily Vance, dies or is declared incompetent before her 25th birthday, the estate shall be liquidated and donated entirely to charity. If she reaches her 25th birthday in sound mind, she inherits everything.”
Emily looked at the clock on the warehouse wall.
11:15 PM.
In forty-five minutes, she would turn twenty-five.
"Julian doesn't want you incompetent anymore, Emily," Noah realized, his face turning pale. "If you are incompetent after tomorrow, the charity clause doesn't apply, but if you regain your memory, he loses it all. He has to kill you before midnight so he can claim you died of 'medical complications' before the inheritance officially transferred to you."
Suddenly, the power in the warehouse cut out.
The rhythmic dripping of the rain was replaced by the low, heavy idle of multiple car engines outside.
Beam after beam of bright, halogen headlights pierced through the cracked windows of the warehouse, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air.
A megaphone crackled to life.
"Emily," Julian's voice echoed through the empty space, smooth, mocking, and entirely devoid of mercy. "I know you're in there. And I know you haven't had your daily dose of medicine. The withdrawal must be starting. Come out, and we can make this painless. Otherwise... I'll let Dr. Aris try his new experimental treatment on your friend Noah."
May you like
Emily gripped Noah's hand.
And then, the first agonizing wave of withdrawal hit her. Her brain felt like it was on fire, and she screamed as her legs began to violently twitch.
