Chapter 4 - The Secret in the WallsBack at the estate, the storm raged outside, rattling the massive iron gates and howling through the ancient oaks.

Sofia Romano sat on the edge of the velvet sofa in the grand drawing room, clutching a cup of chamomile tea Rosa had forced into her hands. Her eyes were red-rimmed, her face pale as parchment. When the heavy front doors burst open and Dante walked in—his coat torn at the shoulder, blood staining the dark fabric, carrying a sleeping Emma wrapped in his own heavy wool coat—Sofia dropped the teacup. It shattered against the Persian rug, the liquid spreading like a stain of blood.

"Emma!" Sofia shrieked, scrambling off the sofa and rushing forward.

Dante gently knelt, lowering the sleeping child into her mother’s trembling arms. Emma burrowed instinctively into Sofia’s neck, murmuring something about sunflowers and her rag doll before drifting back into a deep, safe slumber.

Sofia clutched her daughter fiercely, tears streaming down her hollow cheeks. She looked up at Dante, her voice cracking with a mixture of terror and fierce, maternal fury.

"Why?" Sofia sobbed. "Why did they take her? What do these monsters want with us? We have nothing! We are nobody!"

"You are not nobody," Dante said, his voice uncharacteristically gentle as he looked down at the woman who worked herself to the bone just to keep her child from freezing. He extended a hand and pulled a small, silver locket out of his pocket—one that had fallen from Marcus’s pocket during the scuffle on the pier. It bore the crest of the Maroni syndicate, but inside was an old photograph of Sofia’s late husband standing beside a man Sofia had never seen before: Marcus Vance.

Sofia gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "That's... that's David's coworker from the shipping yard. Marcus. He said he was just a low-level clerk..."

"He wasn't a clerk," Dante said darkly, pacing toward the tall fireplace where the flames cast long shadows across his chiseled face. "Marcus was laundering Maroni money through the union accounts your husband managed. When David found out and threatened to go to federal authorities, Marcus framed him for the embezzlement, and the Maronis burned his office to silence him forever."

Sofia stared at the locket, the color draining entirely from her face. The truth—long buried under lies, threats, and poverty—hit her like a physical blow. "They killed him... and then they hunted us..."

"They won't hunt you anymore," Dante said, turning to face her. His dark eyes burned with an intense, unyielding protective fire. "Marcus Vance is running for his life tonight. And Frankie Maroni will have bigger problems by sunrise."

Sofia stood up slowly, shifting sleeping Emma onto her hip. She looked at Dante—the feared mafia boss of Chicago, bleeding from a bullet graze, standing in a room dedicated to his own lost family—and for the first time in three years, something shifted in the heavy air between them.

"You saved her," Sofia whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "You risked everything for my little girl. Why, Mr. Moretti? A man like you... you don't save people."

Dante walked slowly toward her, stopping just a foot away. He looked at Emma’s peaceful face resting against her mother’s shoulder, and then back into Sofia’s tired, beautiful brown eyes.

"Because," Dante said quietly, "for three years, I thought my house was a tomb for the people I failed to save. I was wrong. It was just waiting for someone who needed me to remember how to live."

Sofia reached out, her rough, bleach-worn hand trembling slightly as she touched the torn fabric of Dante’s coat, right over his bleeding shoulder.

"Let me clean that," she whispered.

Dante didn't pull away.

Little did they know, as the fire crackled in the hearth, a security monitor in the basement surveillance room flickered. The hidden camera embedded behind the library bookshelf—installed years ago by Dante’s paranoid predecessors—was recording every second of their conversation. And the feed was being automatically piped directly to a secure receiver in the penthouse of Frankie Maroni.
