Chapter 5 - The Maroni UltimatumFrankie Maroni swirled the amber liquid in his crystal tumbler, a sickening, predatory grin stretching across his scarred face as he watched the monitor feed from Dante’s estate play out on his high-definition screen.

"Well, well, well," Frankie muttered, taking a slow sip of his whiskey. "The great Stone Moretti has finally found himself a new queen. And her name is Sofia Romano—the widow of the rat who tried to sink our shipping lanes."
Across the plush leather-lined office stood three of Frankie’s top capos, along with a bruised and battered Marcus Vance, who was clutching a bloodied handkerchief to his ribs.
"Dante’s compromised, Boss," Marcus snarled, his eyes filled with venom and humiliation. "He’s thinking with his heart. He let me walk out of that slaughterhouse just to send a message, but he’s weak now. The girl and her mother are his Achilles' heel."
Frankie set his glass down with a sharp clack. "A heel we are going to sever. Listen closely, boys. Dante thinks he won round one because he cleaned out my accounts in the Cicero district. But he doesn't know about the hidden vault beneath the old municipal records office. That’s where the real leverage is."
"What kind of leverage, Frankie?" asked Bruno, a hulking brute with a nose that had been broken three times.
"David Romano—the maid's dead husband—wasn't just an accountant," Frankie smiled darkly. "He kept a digital ledger on a secure thumb drive before we toasted his office. That drive contains the names of every corrupt federal judge, police captain, and politician in Chicago on our payroll. Including the men who look the other way for Dante Moretti."
Frankie leaned forward, his eyes gleaming with malice. "If Dante gets his hands on that drive, he controls the entire city—not just the docks. And if we get our hands on Sofia and the kid, we trade the drive for Moretti’s entire empire. Lock, stock, and barrel."
"And the girl?" Marcus asked eagerly. "What happens to the brat?"
Frankie chuckled darkly. "Collateral damage, Marcus. Just collateral damage."
Meanwhile, back at the Moretti estate, Dante sat in his private study while Sofia carefully dabbed antiseptic onto the gunshot graze on his shoulder. The sting was sharp, but Dante didn't flinch. His eyes were fixed on a map of Chicago spread across his desk, marked with red pins indicating Maroni stash houses.
"You should rest," Sofia murmured, her fingers moving with surprising gentleness against his skin. "You're bleeding through the bandage."
"I don't rest," Dante replied evenly. "Not while there’s a threat under my roof."
Sofia paused, her hand resting softly on his bare shoulder. "Emma... she talks about you, you know. Even when you're not around. She calls you the 'Iron Giant' who keeps the monsters away."
Dante looked up, catching her gaze in the dim lamplight. The distance between them had vanished, replaced by an unspoken, magnetic tension forged in fire and shared grief.
"I am a monster, Sofia," Dante said, his voice dropping to a gravelly whisper. "I have blood on these hands that no soap will ever wash off."
"Maybe," Sofia whispered, leaning in just a fraction closer, her brown eyes searching his face. "But to us... you're the only safety we've ever known."
Before Dante could speak, the entire mansion suddenly plunged into absolute pitch blackness. The backup generator outside sputtered, groaned, and died with a sharp electrical pop.

Dante instantly shoved Sofia behind his desk, drawing his weapon in one fluid motion.
"Stay down," he growled, his eyes scanning the dark doorway. "They're here."
