Chapter 9 - The Garden in Full BloomSix months later.

The summer sun beat down warmly across the manicured lawns of the Moretti estate, bathing Lake Michigan in a brilliant, glittering sheet of sapphire blue. The iron gates had been repaired—stronger, taller, but no longer locked against the world.

In Elena’s old sunflower garden, the soil was no longer choked with weeds. Towering, vibrant yellow sunflowers stretched toward the sky, standing ten feet tall, their massive golden faces basking in the radiant heat of July.

Emma Romano—now three and a half, with a brand-new pink dress, shiny red shoes, and a clean, perfectly intact rag doll tucked securely under her arm—skipped down the garden path, laughing as a butterfly fluttered past her nose.

Sitting on a wrought-iron bench nearby, Sofia watched her daughter with a soft, radiant smile that reached all the way to her warm brown eyes. She wore a simple, elegant sundress, her chestnut hair falling in soft waves around her shoulders. The tired exhaustion of bleach-burned hands and endless late-night panic was entirely gone, replaced by the quiet, glowing grace of a woman finally at peace.

Footsteps sounded on the gravel path. Sofia didn't need to look up to know who it was.

Dante Moretti walked toward them, wearing a crisp white linen shirt, his dark hair touched slightly by the summer breeze. The aura of terrifying isolation that had once defined him as "Stone" had vanished, replaced by the calm, grounded strength of a protector who had finally found his home.

Dante stopped beside Sofia, looking down at the towering sunflowers, and then at Emma, who was now dancing in circles around a stone birdbath.

"They grew," Dante said softly, a faint, genuine smile touching the corners of his mouth—a smile he hadn't worn in three long years.

Sofia turned her head, looking up at him with deep, unending affection in her eyes. She reached out, her hand resting softly over his calloused fingers.

"You watered them, Dante," Sofia whispered softly. "You gave them a reason to grow."

Dante looked down at her, his dark eyes softening completely. He turned his hand over, interlocking his fingers tightly with hers. "We watered them together."

Just then, little Emma scampered over, clutching her rag doll in one hand while holding out a freshly picked, brilliant yellow sunflower in the other. She trotted right up to Dante, holding the flower up as high as her tiny arms could reach.

"For you, Mr. Moretti," Emma announced proudly, her big brown eyes shining with absolute adoration. "Daisy says you’re officially allowed to live in our castle now. And Mommy has a secret to tell you."

Dante knelt down on one knee, gently taking the sunflower from her small hands, his chest swelling with a warmth he never knew existed. He looked up at Sofia, whose cheeks had flushed a delicate shade of pink, a secret, beautiful smile playing on her lips.

"What secret is that, little one?" Dante asked gently, pulling Emma close against his shoulder.

Emma leaned in conspiratorially, whispering right into his ear with a giggle: "Mommy said... she’s finally remembered how to smile forever. And she wants to make sure you never forget how, either."

Dante closed his eyes for a fraction of a second, breathing in the scent of sunshine, earth, and new beginnings. The ghosts of the past were finally at rest, and for the first time in three years, the most feared mafia boss in Chicago didn't feel like stone at all.

He felt entirely alive.
