Chapter 3 - The Traitor at the TableBy 10:00 AM, the grand mahogany conference room on the top floor of Carter Global Headquarters was packed. The board members sat in hushed anticipation. At the head of the table sat me. To my right sat Isabella, clutching her pen so tightly her knuckles were stark white.

And directly across from me sat Adrian.

He looked cool, collected, and dangerously confident. He offered me a warm, fraternal smile—the smile of a best man who had supposedly spent the night celebrating our union.

"Nathan," Adrian said, clearing his throat and addressing the board. "Before we dive into the Q3 financials, I think we should all congratulate our CEO and his wonderful bride. A toast to eternal loyalty and partnership."

Murmurs of agreement rippled through the room. Several board members raised their coffee cups.

I didn't blink. I slowly leaned back in my leather chair, locking my eyes onto Adrian’s.

"Loyalty is a fascinating word, Adrian," I said, my voice echoing clearly off the glass walls. "Especially in business. People often spend years building something, trusting their closest confidants, only to find out those confidants are carving up the carcass before the body is even cold."

Adrian’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second. "An ominous start to a morning meeting, Nathan. Everything alright?"

"Everything is precisely where it needs to be," I replied.

I pressed a button on the conference table console.

Instantly, the massive, wall-mounted projector screen flickered to life. Instead of corporate spreadsheets, a waveform graphic appeared on the screen.

"Before we discuss the expansion," I said calmly, "I’d like to play a little audio file for everyone here. It’s a conversation recorded last night. A discussion about corporate governance, inheritance, and... whiskey."

Color vanished from Adrian’s face so fast it looked like he’d been struck by lightning. Isabella let out a sharp, strangled gasp, dropping her pen as it clattered loudly against the hardwood table.
