Chapter 6 - Shadows in the PenthouseA week had passed since the arrest, but the media storm showed no signs of slowing down. Carter Global’s stock prices had initially dipped, but my swift, decisive action—coupled with the public sympathy wave—ultimately sent shares soaring to an all-time high.

I was untouchable.
Yet, late one evening, as the city lights twinkled far below my penthouse windows, a deep, gnawing unease settled in my chest.
Rosa noticed it while clearing away my dinner plate.
"You haven't slept properly in days, Mr. Carter," she said gently. "The worst is over. They’re behind bars. Isabella is facing trial with zero legal defense. You won."
"Did I, Rosa?" I murmured, staring out at the dark horizon. "Adrian was a brilliant corporate strategist, yes. But he was also arrogant, sloppy, and predictable. When we listened to them talk under our bed that night... something didn't add up."
Rosa paused, her hands freezing on the tray. "What do you mean?"
"Adrian was smart enough to build a corporate espionage ring, but he wasn't smart enough to orchestrate a billion-dollar asset transfer without leaving a paper trail," I said, narrowing my eyes. "He was too desperate. Too willing to rush. It felt like... he was being pushed."
Before Rosa could answer, a sharp, urgent beep echoed through the penthouse security system.
We both froze.
The private elevator chime dinged.
