Chapter 9 - Checkmate on the Edge of the Abyss"Legally?" I asked, a dark, dangerous smile slowly spreading across my face.

Elena raised an eyebrow, crossing her arms. "Of course. While you were busy playing detective with Adrian and your little maid, my corporate lawyers were filing emergency injunctions based on pre-nuptial corporate clauses you signed over a decade ago. As my legal spouse—since my death was never officially certified by a probate judge due to the missing remains—every single asset you own, including Carter Global, reverts to me."

She reached into her briefcase, pulled out a thick stack of documents, and tossed them onto the mahogany desk.

"Sign the transfer papers, Nathan," Elena said, her voice turning icy. "Or spend the rest of your life in a federal penitentiary while I strip away every hotel, every resort, and every brick of your precious empire. Choose."

Rosa looked at me with wide, panicked eyes, silently begging me not to do it.

I looked at the papers. Then I looked at Elena.

Slowly, deliberately, I reached out. I picked up the heavy gold fountain pen resting beside the documents.

Elena’s eyes lit up with uncontainable triumph. She stepped forward, her hand outstretched to snatch the signed contract the moment the ink touched the page.

"Smart man," she whispered. "I knew you always knew when to—"

Click.

The sharp, metallic sound echoed loudly through the penthouse.

Elena stopped dead in her tracks.

From the shadows behind the wet bar, two men in dark suits stepped out. One of them was Agent Miller of the FBI’s financial crimes division. In his hand, he held a high-definition digital recording device that was still blinking red.

Elena’s face drained of every drop of color. She spun around, her eyes darting to the agent.

"What... what is this?" she stammered, the cool composure shattering completely.

I capped the fountain pen and tossed it casually back onto the desk.
