CHAPTER 1 — The Sneakers That Started a Prison War

The women's prison had its own laws.

None of them were written.

None of them were spoken aloud.

Yet every inmate learned them sooner or later.

And some paid for those lessons with blood.

The loudspeaker buzzed across the concrete yard as another gray morning began.

Steel doors slammed open.

Chains rattled.

Hundreds of women filed outside for recreation, splitting naturally into groups according to rank.

At the center of the yard stood one person nobody dared ignore.

Vanessa.

Six feet tall.

Broad shoulders covered in faded prison tattoos.

Her fists had broken jaws.

Her name alone ended arguments before they started.

The guards watched her carefully—but never too closely.

Even officers knew that controlling Vanessa usually created more problems than leaving her alone.

She ruled Cell Block C without wearing a badge.

If she wanted your blanket...

It became hers.

If she wanted your food...

You handed it over.

If she wanted your bunk...

You slept on the floor.

No one challenged her twice.

Then the prison gates opened.

A transport van rolled inside.

Five new inmates stepped out.

Most looked terrified.

One looked strangely calm.

Kate.

Twenty-eight years old.

Average height.

Dark hair tied neatly behind her head.

No visible tattoos.

No tears.

No shaking hands.

She quietly accepted her prison uniform, folded her blanket with military precision, and laced up the brand-new white sneakers every new arrival received.

Nothing about her attracted attention.

Until the next morning.

The yard buzzed with conversation.

Vanessa leaned against a bench, watching the newcomers like a wolf choosing prey.

Then her eyes landed on Kate's spotless sneakers.

Brand new.

Bright white.

Untouched.

Vanessa grinned.

"Those don't belong on your feet."

The conversations around them immediately died.

Women exchanged nervous looks.

Another victim.

Another public humiliation.

Kate looked up slowly.

"I'm keeping them."

Vanessa laughed so loudly birds scattered from the prison fence.

"No...

You're borrowing them.

From me."

The surrounding inmates backed away, forming a wide circle.

Phones secretly appeared beneath jackets.

Someone whispered,

"This won't take long."

Vanessa shoved Kate hard enough to make most newcomers fall.

Kate moved half a step.

Nothing more.

That irritated Vanessa even more.

She stepped closer until they were almost touching.

"You think you're special?"

Kate answered quietly.

"No."

"Then why aren't you scared?"

A long silence.

Finally...

Kate smiled.

"You'll understand soon."

The words only made everyone laugh harder.

Vanessa grabbed Kate's shoulder.

"You still don't know where you are."

Then she shouted for the whole prison to hear,

"Take off those shoes...

Or I'll remove them with your feet attached."

Laughter exploded.

Vanessa crouched, grabbed one sneaker with both hands...

...and pulled.

She never saw Kate move.

No one did.

A sharp crack echoed through the prison yard.

Vanessa suddenly screamed.

Not with anger.

With pain.

The biggest, strongest inmate in the prison collapsed onto one knee, clutching her wrist as if every bone inside had shattered.

Silence swallowed the yard.

Nobody understood what had happened.

Then Kate calmly stepped backward...

and spoke seven chilling words.

May you like

"You should never touch another soldier."

The entire prison froze.
