CHAPTER 1 — THE MAN EVERYONE THOUGHT WOULD DIE

The iron gates slammed shut with a deafening crash.

Every conversation stopped for a split second as another inmate entered Black Ridge Maximum Security Prison—the place where murderers, gang leaders, and men with nothing left to lose spent the rest of their lives.

But this newcomer didn't look like he belonged.

He was nearly seventy years old.

Thin.

Gray-haired.

Wearing worn-out glasses held together with clear tape.

His prison uniform hung loosely from his frail shoulders, and he carried nothing except a small Bible and a faded photograph tucked inside his pocket.

The guards barely looked at him.

The inmates laughed openly.

"A retirement home is two blocks away, Grandpa."

"Wrong address."

"Hope you wrote your will."

The old man simply smiled politely.

"My name is Walter," he said softly.

Nobody cared.

Unknown to everyone inside those walls, Walter had never committed the crime that brought him there.

Months earlier, his business partner—the man he had trusted like a brother for thirty-five years—had framed him for laundering money through a charity foundation.

Every piece of evidence had been fabricated.

Every witness had disappeared.

His entire fortune had vanished overnight.

While the real criminal escaped overseas, Walter was sentenced to twenty-five years.

At his age...

It was a death sentence.

Still, Walter never complained.

He helped younger inmates carry heavy boxes.

He thanked every guard.

He apologized even when someone bumped into him.

His kindness only made him look weaker.

And weakness inside Black Ridge attracted predators.

The biggest predator of them all had only one name.

Strength.

Six-foot-six.

Over three hundred pounds.

Covered from neck to fists in prison tattoos.

Rumors said he'd killed two inmates with his bare hands.

Others claimed he once broke a man's arm simply because he looked at him too long.

No one challenged him.

No one touched his belongings.

No one even sat at his table.

That evening, Walter walked into the dining hall carrying his tray.

Every seat seemed occupied except one.

He quietly sat down.

Several inmates exchanged horrified glances.

"Oh no..."

"Someone stop him."

"He has no idea."

But nobody moved.

Because everyone knew whose table it was.

A minute later...

The giant appeared.

Strength slowly walked across the cafeteria.

Every footstep echoed like thunder.

The room became completely silent.

He stopped beside Walter.

"Move."

Walter looked up calmly.

"I'm almost finished eating."

"You've got the wrong seat."

Walter glanced around.

"There are empty chairs everywhere."

Strength leaned closer.

"This table belongs to me."

Walter wiped his mouth with a napkin.

"I don't see your name written on it."

The entire cafeteria held its breath.

Strength's jaw tightened.

Without another word...

He grabbed Walter's tray—

—and flipped the entire meal over the old man's head.

Hot porridge dripped down Walter's face.

Bread rolled across the floor.

The room erupted with cruel laughter.

Strength smirked.

"Dinner's over."

Walter slowly removed his glasses.

Carefully cleaned them with a napkin.

Placed them back on his face.

Then looked directly into Strength's eyes.

His voice was barely above a whisper.

"Are you finished?"

Something about that calm tone made even hardened killers feel uneasy.

Strength laughed.

Then raised his massive fist.

He intended to knock the old man unconscious with a single punch.

But before his fist could land...

A voice thundered across the cafeteria.

"EVERYBODY FREEZE!"

Every guard in the room suddenly sprinted toward Walter—

not to protect Strength...

May you like

But to protect the old man.

And what happened next changed the prison forever...
