CHAPTER 1 — The Blanket That Started Everything

The oldest inmate in Blackridge Women's Correctional Facility had learned one painful lesson.

Never make eye contact.

Never answer back.

Never cry where anyone could see.

At seventy-two years old, Eleanor Hayes looked more like someone's grandmother than a convicted criminal. Her silver hair was tied into a loose braid. Her hands trembled from arthritis. Every morning she struggled just to lace her prison boots.

Yet she was the one everyone treated the worst.

Because she never fought back.

The prison guards rarely interfered.

As long as nobody was bleeding...

It wasn't their problem.

That freezing November night, Eleanor slept on the bottom bunk wrapped in the only thing she still considered hers—an old brown-and-red checkered blanket someone from the prison church had donated years ago.

It carried no value.

Except to her.

Hidden inside one corner was a tiny patch her late husband had sewn decades earlier after their grandson accidentally tore it during a camping trip.

It was the last thing she still owned from the life she had lost.

Then the barracks door slammed open.

Heavy boots echoed through the silence.

Every inmate immediately knew who it was.

Vanessa Cole.

Six feet tall.

Covered in tattoos.

Serving four life sentences for leading one of the most violent prison gangs in the state.

Even the guards preferred avoiding her.

Vanessa slowly walked between the bunks until she stopped beside Eleanor.

A cruel smile spread across her face.

"So the queen is sleeping."

Without warning...

She grabbed the blanket.

RIIIP!

The old fabric flew through the air before landing directly inside a filthy puddle left by a leaking pipe.

The water instantly soaked through every thread.

Laughter exploded across the room.

Eleanor slowly opened her eyes.

She looked at the blanket.

Then at Vanessa.

For just a second...

Pain crossed her face.

Not anger.

Not fear.

Heartbreak.

Vanessa tossed a huge sack of dirty prison uniforms onto the floor.

"You'll wash every one of these before lights out."

She leaned close enough for Eleanor to smell cigarette smoke on her breath.

"And if they're not spotless..."

She smiled.

"You'll sleep on bare concrete tonight."

The elderly woman quietly bent down.

Her knees cracked with every movement.

She picked up the soaking blanket as gently as though it were made of glass.

Not a single complaint escaped her lips.

Several younger inmates looked away.

Even they felt guilty.

Everyone knew Eleanor wasn't dangerous.

Years earlier, her nephew had convinced her to sign documents she couldn't read after promising they involved a family inheritance.

Instead...

He had used her identity to steal millions through a fraudulent investment scheme.

When investigators arrived...

He disappeared forever.

She went to prison.

He went overseas.

Justice never found him.

Vanessa laughed.

"You're too weak for this place."

Eleanor softly answered.

"No...

I'm just old enough to know that cruelty always comes with a bill."

The room fell silent.

Vanessa burst into laughter.

"You threatening me?"

Eleanor simply shook her head.

"I'm warning you."

Nobody understood what she meant.

Not even the guards.

But less than ten minutes later...

The sound of helicopter blades thundered over the prison.

May you like

And for the first time in twenty years...

The emergency alarm began screaming through every corridor.
