CHAPTER 5 — The Nephew Returned
The courtroom was overflowing.
Journalists lined every wall.
Television cameras waited outside.
Everyone wanted to witness the man responsible for stealing fifteen years of an innocent woman's life.
Michael Hayes entered wearing handcuffs.
He looked nothing like the confident young businessman who had once convinced his aunt to sign "inheritance papers."
His hair had turned gray.
His shoulders sagged.
His eyes never lifted from the floor.
When the judge asked whether he wished to make a statement...
He turned toward Eleanor.
"I destroyed the one person who loved me without conditions."
His voice cracked.
"I kept telling myself I'd send someone to help you."
"I never did."
"I heard you were being abused in prison."
"I still stayed silent."
Tears streamed down his face.
"I don't deserve forgiveness."
The courtroom remained silent.
Everyone waited for Eleanor to speak.
She slowly stood.
"I already forgave you years ago."
Gasps filled the room.
Michael looked up in disbelief.
"But forgiveness," Eleanor continued calmly, "doesn't erase responsibility."
"You must tell the whole truth."
"Not for me."
"For every innocent person still trapped because someone lied."
Michael nodded.
Then he revealed something that stunned everyone.
He hadn't acted alone.
A corrupt accountant...
A dishonest attorney...
And two former government officials had helped fabricate the evidence that sent Eleanor to prison.
Within hours...
Four more arrests were made.
