Chapter 1 - The Confession and the Cold RealityThe name echoed in the silent bedroom, bouncing off the walls and lodging itself somewhere deep in my chest.

Grandpa Richard.
My father.
For a terrifying second, my brain flat-out refused to process the words. Richard Vance—retired high school principal, pillar of the community, doting grandfather who brought oversized stuffed animals to every birthday and never missed a holiday dinner. The man who taught me how to throw a baseball and lectured me for hours about integrity, honor, and family values.
"Chloe," I managed, my voice cracking as I knelt lower, catching her trembling shoulders in my hands. "Look at me, sweetheart. Are you sure? Are you talking about my dad?"
She nodded, fresh tears spilling over her lower lashes. "He... he said if I told anyone, he wouldn't love me anymore. He said it was our secret game. But it hurts, Dad. It hurts every time he comes over when Mom is at the grocery store."
A sickening wave of nausea hit me, followed immediately by a surge of white-hot, blinding rage. Every drop of blood in my body rushed to my ears. The room tilted. If Richard had walked through that door right then, I would have killed him with my bare hands. No trial, no questions, no hesitation.
"Harrison! Chloe! Five minutes!" Meredith’s voice drifted up the stairwell, bright and completely oblivious, slicing through the heavy, suffocating silence of the room. "The traffic to the auditorium is going to be a nightmare if we don't leave right now!"
"Dad?" Chloe whispered, her tiny fingers clutching my sleeve. "What are we going to do? Is he going to go to jail?"
I swallowed hard, forcing the tsunami of fury down into a dark, frozen cage inside my chest. I couldn't let Meredith know yet. Not here, not now, with the piano recital looming and half our extended family already waiting at the venue. If Meredith found out right this second, she would completely break down, the scene would explode, and Richard might somehow slip away before we could trap him.
"Listen to me, Chloe," I said, keeping my voice as steady as humanly possible while wiping a tear from her cheek. "You are the bravest girl in the entire world for telling me. I believe you. 100%. I am going to fix this, I promise you on my life. But we have to play it smart. Can you put on your dress for me? We are going to go to the recital, act completely normal, and the second we get back home tonight, I am going to end this nightmare forever."
She sniffled, wiping her nose with the back of her hand, and nodded bravely.
May you like
As I helped her slide the sparkling recital dress over her head, carefully avoiding the bruised skin on her back, my mind raced. Richard was driving down separately with his wife, my stepmother Helen. They were meeting us at the auditorium.
Tonight, the mask of the respected patriarch was coming off. And Hell was coming with it.
