Chapter 5 - The UnravelingBefore Richard could scramble away or try to twist the narrative further, the garage door behind us suddenly rattled.

The inner door swung open, and Meredith stepped out into the light, holding a plate with a slice of cake. Her face was frozen in confusion as she looked at me pinning her father-in-law against the workbench.

"Harrison! What on earth are you doing?!" Meredith shrieked, dropping the plate. It shattered into a hundred white ceramic shards on the concrete. "Are you out of your mind?! Let go of him right now!"

"Meredith, run back inside," I said, my voice shaking as I kept my grip on Richard's jacket. "Get Chloe and lock the front door."

"Have you been drinking? Let go of your father this instant or I swear to God I'm calling the police!" she screamed, rushing forward and trying to pry my fingers off his lapels.

"Let her call them," Richard spat, his voice turning icy and manipulative in a split second. He twisted his face into a mask of pathetic victimhood, turning watery eyes toward Meredith. "Meredith, thank God. Your husband has lost his mind. He accused me of... of unspeakable things. He's delusional, Meredith. He needs help."

Meredith stopped, her hands hovering over my arms. She looked between Richard’s weeping face and my cold, unyielding glare.

"Harrison... what is he talking about?" she whispered, horror dawning in her eyes. "What did you say?"

"Ask him why Chloe has handprints bruised across her lower back," I said, my voice deadpan. "Ask him why she has been terrified to go upstairs alone since February."

Meredith recoiled as if she had been physically struck. She turned to Richard, her breath catching in her throat. "Richard... tell me he's lying. Tell me my baby girl didn't..."

Richard opened his mouth to spin another lie, but he didn't get the chance.

Because from the doorway behind Meredith, a small, trembling voice cut through the air.

"He's not lying, Mom."

We all turned.

Chloe stood in the doorway, clutching her stuffed bear to her chest. Her eyes were red-rimmed, but her chin was held high. She looked directly at her grandfather, and then at her mother.

"He hurt me, Mom. In my room. And he told me he'd hurt you too if I told anyone."

The silence in the garage was absolute. You could hear the hum of the refrigerator inside the kitchen.

Meredith’s knees buckled. She dropped to the floor beside the broken plate, staring at her daughter, and then letting out a primal, agonizing scream of betrayal and grief that shook the rafters.
