Chapter 6 - The Arrest and the Dark DiscoveryWithin fifteen minutes, the flashing red and blue lights of police cruisers painted our living room walls in violent neon streaks.

Two officers stood by the front door, while a female detective knelt on the living room rug, gently talking to Chloe with a social worker by her side. Meredith sat on the couch, wrapped in a blanket, staring blankly at the wall, tears streaming silently down her face in an endless river.
Outside in the driveway, my father sat handcuffed in the back of a police cruiser, looking out the tinted window with a cold, dead stare that showed not a shred of remorse—only bitter annoyance that his immaculate reputation had finally burned to ash.
Detective Miller walked over to me, holding a small plastic evidence bag containing my voice recorder, alongside the formal statement I had just signed.
"Mr. Vance," the detective said quietly, her voice heavy with professional fatigue. "We have enough on this recording for an immediate remand without bail. Given his position in the community, the judge is going to throw the book at him. And based on the preliminary medical examination of Chloe, we’re looking at multiple felony counts."
"Can he post bail?" I asked, my voice hollow.
"Not with these charges, and not with the audio confession you captured," Miller replied firmly. "He's going straight downtown."
As the cruiser's engine revved and it backed out of the driveway, carrying the monster who had betrayed three generations of our family, a strange, hollow numbness settled over me. I thought the anger would make me feel victorious. Instead, I just felt sick.
"Harrison," Meredith whispered hoarsely from the couch, not looking up. "How did we not see it? How long was he alone with her?"
"We're going to find out," I said, walking over and sitting beside her, wrapping my arm around her trembling shoulders. "We're going to get Chloe all the help in the world, and we are going to tear every single lie he ever told apart."
Little did we know, Richard’s arrest was only the rotting tip of a much deeper, darker iceberg.
Three days later, while cleaning out my father’s home office alongside the investigators, I opened the bottom drawer of his heavy oak desk and found a locked metal lockbox. With a single swing of a hammer, the latch snapped.
Inside weren't financial documents.
Inside were dozens of unmarked VHS tapes, flash drives, and a handwritten ledger containing names, dates, and addresses spanning back over twenty-five years—dating all the way back to when I was a child.

My blood ran instantly cold. Richard wasn't just a monster who targeted my daughter.
He was a serial predator who had operated in plain sight for decades, and the names in that ledger included the children of some of the most powerful people in the state.
