Chapter 1 - The Breakout and the Poisoned Legacy

The name Eleanor fell like a bomb into the quiet grand reception hall.
The tall man in the grey suit—Arthur Sterling, Leo’s ruthless uncle and self-appointed guardian—froze mid-stride. His eyes widened, not with grief, but with a terrifying, predatory fury. For seven years, Eleanor Sterling’s name had been erased from the family estate. To speak it was treason; to claim her mandate was an invitation to destruction.
“Lie!” Arthur roared, reaching out a hand to snatch the barefoot girl by the hair. “Guards! Drag this stray off the property immediately!”
Before the heavy security detail could move, Leo did something he had never done in his twelve years of life. He yanked the joy-stick of his heavy motorized wheelchair into reverse, pulling Maya back with him. The rubber tires screeched against the polished marble floor.
“Don’t touch her!” Leo screamed, his frail voice cracking, echoing off the high vaulted ceilings.
“Leo, don’t be a fool,” Arthur hissed, stepping forward with an icy composure. “She’s a fraud, a thief who snuck past the gates. Look at her—she’s insane.”
Maya didn’t flinch. She kept her grip on Leo’s small, pale hand, squeezing hard enough to transfer her warmth into his ice-cold fingers. She leaned down, her dark eyes flashing like lightning against her mud-streaked face.
“He’s been feeding you blue pills every night at 8 PM, hasn’t he?” Maya whispered, just loud enough for Leo to hear. “He tells you it’s for your heart. But it’s not for your heart, Leo. It’s the reason your legs won’t wake up.”
Leo’s breath caught in his throat. His mind raced back to every single night in his dark, silent bedroom, when Arthur personally brought a silver tray with a single blue capsule and a glass of water. How could she possibly know that?
“You... who are you?” Leo choked out.
“Someone who promised your mother I’d cut the chains off her son,” Maya said softly.
Arthur lunged forward, grabbing Maya by the collar of her torn brown dress. But Maya was wild, raised by the harsh wilderness beyond the estate's high fences. She stomped her hard, unwashed heel onto Arthur’s leather shoe, twisting with full force. Arthur bellowed in pain, letting go.
“Now, Leo! Push the emergency release!” Maya shouted.
In a fraction of a second, Leo slammed the manual release lever beneath his armrest. Maya grabbed him under his arms and hauled his light, frail body straight out of the heavy chair, slinging his arm over her shoulder. Leo’s useless legs dragged against the cold floor, but Maya’s legs were like iron. She carried almost his entire weight, sprinting straight toward the floor-to-ceiling glass doors leading out into the storm-battered terrace.

“Stop them! Kill the girl if you have to!” Arthur screamed, clutching his crushed foot as security guards swarmed the room.
Maya hurled her body against the glass doors. The metal latch gave way with a deafening crash, shattering glass across the patio as rain poured into the ballroom. Together, the crippled heir and the barefoot girl vanished into the roaring, pitch-black night.
