Chapter 6 - The Poison in His Blood Unmasked

Leo stepped in front of Maya, shielding her with his body despite his unsteady balance.

“It’s over, Arthur,” Leo said, his voice deep and steady. “I know about the pills. I know what you did to my mother.”

Arthur laughed hysterically, the sound echoing cold and hollow against the glass walls.

“You think you know?” Arthur taunted, taking a step closer. “Leo, my dear boy, you are so hopelessly naive. Do you really think I ruined your legs just to steal a company? I did it to keep you alive!”

Leo frowned, caught off guard. “What are you talking about?”

“Your mother wasn’t a saint, Leo!” Arthur sneered, his eyes flashing with madness. “She was part of a secret syndicate that traded high-level biological assets. The money that built this entire estate? It came from testing experimental nerve drugs on human subjects! You were born with a rare genetic degradation caused by her own experiments! I didn’t poison you with those blue pills, Leo—I was keeping the disease dormant!”

Maya’s jaw dropped. She looked at Leo, whose face had gone completely pale.

“He’s lying!” Maya screamed. “He’s trying to mess with your head!”

“Am I?” Arthur raised a remote control and pressed a button.

The large TV screen on the wall flickered to life. A video played: it was Eleanor Sterling in a laboratory coat, standing in front of rows of medical pods, speaking cold clinical facts about genetic trials.

Leo felt the ground fall out from beneath him. His mind reeled. Everything he believed, his entire drive to fight back, shattered into a thousand pieces.

“You see, Leo?” Arthur smiled gently, holding out his hand. “The girl was lied to. Eleanor used her village as a trash heap for her failed experiments. She sent this barefoot pest to drag you back so she could finish what she started before she died. Come back to your chair, Leo. Take your medication. Be safe.”
