Chapter 2 - The Crimson EnvelopeI stared at the manila folder resting on the scarred wood of the café counter like it was a ticking time bomb. The silence between us stretched, heavy and electric, broken only by the steady, mechanical hum of the refrigerator behind me. Rachel was standing near the dry storage doorway, pretending to check inventory while practically vibrating with curiosity and terror.

"I don't open folders from strangers," I said, forcing a brittle edge of defiance into my voice. "Especially strangers who travel with a private infantry."

Alessandro let out a low, dark chuckle—a sound that vibrated right through my chest. He didn't look angry; if anything, my defiance seemed to amuse him, like a small cat puffing its fur out at a panther.

"We are hardly strangers, Sophia," he said smoothly, his dark eyes tracing the line of my jaw. "You held my son's hand. You spoke his language. In my family, that makes you closer than family. Open it."

With trembling fingers, I slid the tab open and pulled out the contents. It wasn't a business contract or a threat written in blood, as my melodramatic brain had half-expected. It was a single, thick sheet of heavy cardstock embossed with an intricate, silver crest—and beneath it, a plane ticket.

First Class. New York to Rome. Departure: Tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM.

My breath caught in my throat. I dropped the paper back onto the counter as if it had burned me. "What is this? Are you out of your mind?"

"Luca has not stopped talking about you," Alessandro said, his tone shifting from playful to an intense, unyielding seriousness. "He asks for the signorina who speaks his mother's tongue every night before bed. And my security reports tell me something else, Sophia. Someone has been asking questions about you near your apartment complex. People who do not belong to my world... but are desperately trying to break into it."

The blood drained from my face. "What are you talking about?"

"I am talking about your safety," he replied, taking a slow step closer, closing the distance between us until I could feel the heat radiating from his body. "A café worker in Manhattan does not accidentally stumble into a Russo. And rivals of mine are beginning to connect the dots. They think you are a weakness of mine. A leverage point."

"I am a nobody!" I hissed, my voice cracking with panic and frustration. "I pour coffee! I pay rent late! I have nothing to do with your mafia games!"

"You had everything to do with saving my son," Alessandro countered, his voice dropping to a dangerous, hypnotic register. "And once you touch my world, Sophia, you don't get to simply step back onto the sidewalk and pretend you're invisible. You come with me to Italy. Tonight."

May you like

"And if I say no?" I challenged, my chin lifting defiantly despite the sheer terror gripping my soul.

Alessandro tilted his head, a ghost of a smile playing on his lips, though his eyes remained chillingly deadpan. "Then I will simply buy this café, turn it into a parking lot, and have my men carry you to the jet kicking and screaming. The choice, cara, is entirely yours. But either way... you are coming."
