Chapter 4 - Blood on the Tuscan EstateThe helicopter touched down on the sprawling, manicured lawns of the Russo estate just as dawn was painting the Tuscan hills in bruised shades of violet and crimson. Rows of ancient olive trees stood like silent sentinels under a heavy, weeping sky, but the pastoral beauty was shattered by the harsh glare of floodlights and the sight of shattered glass near the grand double doors of the villa.

Alessandro was out of the aircraft before the landing gear had even settled, his long strides eating up the distance toward the main entrance. Marco flanked him closely, and two more armed guards grabbed my arms, gently but firmly escorting me behind them.

"Stay behind me," Alessandro barked over the roaring wind of the rotor blades. "Do not run, do not look back, and if I tell you to drop, you drop."

My heart was pounding against my ribs like a jackhammer. This wasn't a movie. This wasn't a romance novel where the bad boy turns out to have a soft heart and everything wraps up with a neat little bow. This was real, bloody, high-stakes organized crime, and I had willingly—or rather, forcibly—walked right into the lion's den.

As we crossed the grand marble foyer of the villa, the smell of cordite and fresh blood hit me like a physical blow.

Two men in black tactical gear—not Russo’s men—were slumped lifelessly against the Renaissance-era marble columns, dark pools spreading across the pristine white floor. I gasped, stumbling backward and clamping a hand over my mouth to keep from screaming.

"Keep moving, Sophia," Alessandro ordered, his voice dangerously low as he swept his pistol around the corner of the grand staircase.

"Papa!"

A small, high-pitched cry pierced the tension.

From the upper landing, little Luca came running down the stairs, his pajamas slightly rumpled, his dark eyes wide with terror. Behind him, an elderly woman—evidently the nanny—was weeping, desperately trying to pull him back to safety.

Alessandro didn't hesitate. He holstered his gun in a fluid motion and caught Luca as the boy threw himself into his arms, burying his face in his father's neck.

"It's okay, piccolo mio," Alessandro whispered, his voice cracking slightly with a raw, fierce tenderness that he reserved only for his son. "Papa is here. Nothing will ever touch you."

He looked up, his dark eyes finding mine across the blood-stained foyer. Even in the middle of a literal crime scene, his gaze anchored me. He stepped forward, gently setting Luca down behind him and taking my trembling hand in his large, warm grip.

"You see what they are willing to do to reach me?" Alessandro said softly, his thumb rubbing soothingly over my knuckles. "They came into my home, Sophia. They wanted to hurt the things I care about."

"Why did you bring me here, Alessandro?" I cried out, tears finally spilling over my lashes. "If your life is this dangerous, why involve me at all? Send me back to New York! Put me on a commercial flight, lock me in a basement, do whatever you want, just let me go!"

Alessandro stepped closer, his jaw tightening as he cupped my cheek with his free hand, forcing me to look into his dark, burning eyes.

"Because," he whispered fiercely, "the moment you held my son's hand in Central Park, my enemies knew your face. If I sent you back to New York alone, you would be dead before the sun set tonight. You are safer inside my cage than anywhere else on earth."

Before I could process the terrifying truth of his words, a cold, mocking voice echoed from the shadowed archway of the grand parlor.

"How touching. The great Alessandro Russo, reduced to playing domestic hero for a common American coffee girl."

Alessandro went completely rigid. He slowly turned his body, positioning me firmly behind his broad frame, his hand sliding back to the grip of his pistol.

A tall, silver-haired man with cold blue eyes and a permanent smirk stepped out of the shadows, flanked by four heavily armed thugs. It was Don Salvatore Moretti.
