Chapter 1 - THE ASHES OF TOMORROW

The notification bar on Damian’s shattered phone screen looked like a descending red staircase to hell.

Asset liquidation complete: 0.00 USD.

Credit line terminated.

Corporate card declined.

The marble floor of the high-rise executive suite seemed to tilt beneath his Italian leather shoes. Only twenty minutes ago, Damian Vance had been the undisputed titan of the tri-state tech sector—a man whose morning coffee meetings decided the fate of publicly traded corporations. Now, he was a ghost haunting a room that no longer recognized his security clearance.

"Sir, security is escorting us out," his assistant stammered, his voice cracking with panic as he clutched a cardboard box containing a half-empty stapler and a family photo. "The property managers... they say our lease was voided under emergency corporate provisions. We have five minutes."

Damian didn’t move. His eyes were locked on the heavy oak doors where Elena Voss had exited moments before.

Voss Global Holdings.

The name echoed inside his skull like a tolling bell. For five years, Damian had lorded over his corporate kingdom, taking credit for every algorithmic breakthrough, every market monopoly, and every ruthless buyout. He had treated Elena—the quiet, unassuming woman who sat in the corner of every high-stakes negotiation with a worn leather portfolio—as a glorified administrative assistant. He had mocked her coffee orders, discarded her structural risk analyses, and, just this morning, publicly humiliated her by calling her a disposable line item.

And she hadn't just owned the game. She had written the code.

"Damian." Veronica’s voice sliced through the heavy silence, sharp with a desperate edge. Her designer handbag was clutched so tightly her knuckles were white. "Call your father. Call the board chairman. This is a joke—some sick prank pulled by corporate rivals. It has to be."

Damian slowly turned his head to look at her. The woman who had clung to his arm just an hour ago, whispering venomous insults about Elena into his ear, now looked at him with a mix of horror and calculation. She wasn't seeing a billionaire fiancé anymore. She was seeing a liability.

"The board chairman resigned on a live speakerphone call, Veronica," Damian said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Did you not hear it? They didn't just strip my titles. They erased my digital footprint. My tax IDs, my offshore holding accounts, my patents—they're all registered under master trust protocols that require a primary founder signature. A signature belonging to Elena Voss."

Before Veronica could reply, two burly security guards in dark suits stepped into the office. They didn't ask. They flanked Damian with practiced, emotionless efficiency.

"Mr. Vance, your presence is no longer authorized on these premises," the head guard said, his voice flat. "Please surrender your building badge."

"I am the majority share—" Damian started to roar, stepping forward with a flash of his old arrogance.

"You are a trespasser," the guard interrupted, placing a heavy hand on Damian's shoulder. "Step down to the lobby, or we call the precinct."

Stripped of his wealth, his security, and his dignity, Damian Vance was marched out of his own skyscraper, past rows of junior analysts and developers who lowered their eyes not out of respect, but to hide their contempt. As the glass revolving doors pushed him out onto the cold city pavement, the towering LED billboards above Times Square—which usually broadcasted his face alongside quarterly revenue reports—flickered black.

Then, one by one, they lit up with a single, unyielding corporate logo: a stylized interlocking 'V' inside a silver ring.

Veronica lingered inside the lobby, trying to slip past the security desk toward the private elevators, but the guard blocked her path with stone-cold precision.

"You can't do this!" she shrieked, her voice echoing off the polished marble. "Do you know who my family is? My father funds half the municipal development projects in this city!"

Elena Voss was standing by the private elevator bank, waiting for the car to descend. She heard the commotion, paused for a fraction of a second, and glanced back.

Veronica rushed toward her, her face contorted with fury. "You! You little nobody! You think you can pull some cheap stunt and get away with it? Damian will have your license by nightfall! He'll—"

Elena turned slowly. There was no anger in her eyes—only an immense, chilling pity.

"You asked me earlier if I knew who you were," Elena said softly, her voice carrying easily across the cavernous lobby.

Veronica sneered. "And?"

Elena offered that small, weary smile.

May you like

"Yes," Elena replied. "Temporarily."

The elevator doors slid open, swallowing Elena into the private penthouse suite above, leaving Veronica screaming curses at a blank metal wall.
