Chapter 2 - The Midnight Rescue & The Secret PhoneWhile the paramedics wrapped Emma, Sophie, Grace, and Lily in warm thermal blankets and served them hot soup in the heated master suite, I picked up the secondary encrypted phone that had fallen from Vanessa’s pocket during her arrest.

The screen lit up with an incoming text from an unlisted international number:
"Is the billionaire out of the way? Did you secure the signed deed to the Caldwell tech patents before he got home?"
My blood ran cold. This wasn't just a case of an abusive stepmother spending my money. This was a calculated corporate heist, and Vanessa wasn't working alone.
I immediately locked down the home, hired 24/7 private armed security to guard my daughters, and sat by their bedsides.
Emma held my hand with a grip so tight her little knuckles turned white. "Daddy... are you going to leave again?"
"Never," I swore, kissing her forehead, tears streaming down my face. "I am never leaving you girls again. I don't care if Caldwell Systems crumbles to dust. You four are my only enterprise now."
Sophie looked up, her eyes wide with fear. "Daddy... the lady in the wall told Vanessa where to hide the key."
I paused, looking down at my six-year-old. "What lady in the wall, sweetie?"
"The dark closet in the basement," Lily chimed in quietly. "Vanessa talks to the lady in the wall every night when you're away. She says when Daddy goes away forever, we get sent to the farm."
My mind raced. A hidden room in the basement? A lady in the wall?
Leaving the girls under the watchful eye of Dr. Sarah Jenkins—our trusted family doctor whom I had rushed over—I grabbed a flashlight and descended into the dark, stone basement beneath the mansion.
I pulled back the old wine racks near the foundation wall, revealing a heavy steel door hidden behind a fake drywall panel. It required a biometrical keycard.
I used Vanessa's confiscated keycard from her purse. The heavy door clicked open with a deep, echoing hiss.
Inside was a high-tech surveillance server room, monitoring every bedroom in my house—including my executive office. But what caught my breath was the wall-sized whiteboard covering the back room.
It contained a detailed timeline of my wife Claire's illness, financial projections of Caldwell Systems, and a photo of me with a red 'X' drawn over my face.

And right next to my photo was a picture of my trusted business partner and co-founder of Caldwell Systems: Marcus Vance.
CHAPTER 2 HOOK: Vanessa wasn't the mastermind—she was just the pawn. And the true snake was sitting in my own boardroom.
