Marcus Vance was arrested right on the courtroom floor by Federal Agents on charges of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, corporate fraud, and perjury. He faced life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Vanessa was remanded back to maximum security with no bail, charged with first-degree murder for her role in Claire's death, along with felony child abuse and grand larceny.
Their assets were completely seized by the federal government and transferred into an irrevocable trust for my four daughters.
As the police dragged Marcus and Vanessa away in chains, screaming blame at each other, I walked out of the courtroom into the bright Colorado sunshine.
The press swarmed around me, mics thrust into my face.
"Mr. Caldwell! How do you feel about the total destruction of your former partner and wife?"
I looked directly into the news camera and said calmly: "Money didn't build my family, and money couldn't destroy it. Justice was served today."
I drove straight back to the Aspen estate.
When I opened the front doors, the house was warm and filled with light. The dark, cold atmosphere was completely gone. In the center of the living room stood a magnificent 15-foot Christmas tree covered in sparkling golden lights, surrounded by hundreds of presents.
Four little girls came running down the grand staircase, their cheeks healthy and pink, wearing matching red holiday pajamas.
"DADDY!" they squealed in unison.
I dropped to my knees, opening my arms wide as all four of them crashed into me, throwing their little arms around my neck.
"Did you beat the bad people, Daddy?" Emma asked softly, holding my face in her tiny hands.
