Chapter 3 - THE INHERITANCE CLAUSEFacebook Headline Trend: “Dying matriarch threatens to cut off her billionaire son after discovering his secret past!”

The digital clock on the hospital wall blinked 14:15, the red numbers bleeding into the dimming afternoon light. The storm clouds were rolling in over the city skyline, casting a bruised, purple shadow across the immaculate white tiles of Room 402.
Margaret Vance sat upright, her breathing stabilized by an oxygen cannula, though her eyes remained locked on her son like a pair of heat-seeking missiles. She hadn't spoken a word for twenty minutes, letting the suffocating silence do the heavy lifting. Adrian remained motionless in the leather armchair, his arms crossed over his chest, staring fixedly at the toe of his Italian leather shoe.
The door clicked open. Dr. Harrison, a tall, distinguished cardiologist with silver hair, strode in with a tablet tucked under his arm.
"Afternoon, Mrs. Vance. How are we feeling?" Dr. Harrison glanced around the room, instantly picking up on the glacial atmosphere. He cleared his throat. "Ah. Interrupting something?"
"Not at all, Doctor," Margaret said, her voice dry as parchment. "In fact, you're quite timely. I need to make an addendum to my medical proxy and financial estate holdings."
Adrian’s head snapped up, his eyes narrowing. "Mother, don't be absurd. You're recovering from bypass surgery. This isn't the time to—"
"This is the exact time, Adrian," Margaret cut him off, her tone razor-sharp. She turned her gaze to Dr. Harrison. "Can Nurse Emma be trusted as an independent witness to a verbal statement of intent?"
Dr. Harrison blinked, glancing at Emma, who stood quietly by the monitor with her hands folded in front of her scrubs. "Well... institutional protocol usually requires an administrative notary, but for an immediate statement of intent regarding care and visitor rights within the suite—yes, a supervising nurse can bear witness."
"Good," Margaret declared, shifting her gaze back to her son. "Adrian, your corporate board meeting can wait. You told me this morning that your private life was immaculate. That your past was clean. That the foundation of Vance Enterprises was built on unblemished integrity."
"It is," Adrian said, though his voice lacked conviction.
"Then explain why the woman standing three feet away from you is wearing a wedding band inscribed with your initials and the date November 14th, 2012," Margaret snapped.
Dr. Harrison’s eyebrows shot up to his hairline. He looked at Emma, then at Adrian, looking like a man who had accidentally walked onto a movie set.
Emma kept her face entirely neutral. She stepped forward, tapping the digital screen of the heart monitor to log a reading. "Mrs. Vance, your heart rate is climbing again. Stress is counterproductive to the tissue grafts."
"I don't give a damn about my heart rate, Emma," Margaret spat bitterly, though she visibly forced herself to take a deep, shaky breath. She looked back at her son. "Adrian. If there is a legal spouse, a prior contract, or a hidden liability attached to your name that could jeopardize the upcoming municipal merger, the board has a right to know. And I have a right to know who is inheriting my empire."
Adrian stood up slowly. At 6'2", he towered over the room, radiating a cold, intimidating authority that had crushed competitors in boardrooms across the globe. He walked over to the bed, looking down at his mother with an expression of pure, unadulterated coldness.
"There is no legal wife," Adrian said slowly, every word dripping with ice. He turned his head slightly, his dark eyes locking onto Emma’s. "She is a ghost from a life I buried a decade ago. And ghosts don't hold legal rights."
Emma’s lips parted slightly. The audacity of his lie was breathtaking. But before she could speak, the door flew open with a violent crash.
A breathless young paralegal in a charcoal suit rushed into the room, clutching a leather briefcase to his chest. "Mr. Vance! Thank God I found you. The SEC just flagged the acquisition documents. There’s an anonymous injunction filed against your personal asset holdings—and the legal signature on file belongs to someone named... Emma Vance."
The room went dead silent. Even the hum of the ventilation seemed to vanish.

Adrian slowly turned back to Emma. The color had completely drained from his face.
Emma tilted her head, a slow, terrifyingly calm smile touching her lips. "Did you really think I’d let you keep my name without a fight, husband?"
