Chapter 4 - THE SUBPOENA IN WHITE SCRUBSFacebook Headline Trend: “Billionaire CEO slapped with federal asset freeze by his secret nurse wife!”

The paralegal, a young man named Toby whose tie was crooked and forehead glistening with cold sweat, stood frozen in the doorway like a deer caught in headlights. He looked from Adrian’s murderous expression to Margaret’s pale, wide-eyed stare, and finally settled on Emma, who was calmly tapping the pen against her clipboard.

"Mr... Mr. Vance," Toby stammered, fumbling with the brass clasp of his briefcase. "The federal magistrate signed the emergency injunction ten minutes ago. All personal liquidity, offshore accounts linked to the primary holding trust, and the municipal contract bids... they're frozen pending verification of marital assets and identity disclosure."

Margaret let out a sharp, gasping breath. She gripped the hospital sheets so hard her knuckles turned blue. "Frozen? All of it? Adrian, what has this woman done?!"

Adrian didn't look at his mother. His eyes were locked onto Emma with the intensity of a predator staring down a sniper. The veneer of polite corporate charm had completely evaporated, replaced by a raw, feral panic. He took two long, heavy strides toward Emma, ignoring the paralegal entirely.

"You're playing a very dangerous game, Emma," Adrian whispered, his voice trembling with suppressed rage. "You think a fraudulent injunction from some back-alley lawyer is going to bring down Vance Enterprises? I’ll have you dismantled. I’ll strip you of your license, your nursing credentials, and your freedom before nightfall."

Emma didn't flinch. She stood her ground, her shoulders squared, looking straight up into his dark, furious eyes.

"Try it," Emma replied, her voice steady as a rock. "File the motion. Call your corporate lawyers. Let them explain to the federal judge why the CEO of Vance Enterprises listed himself as 'unmarried and single' on his initial venture capital filings back in 2014, while simultaneously holding a joint municipal credit line with a registered nurse in Queens."

Adrian’s breath hitched. The blood drained completely from his face, leaving his skin an ashen gray.

"You kept the ledger," he said, realization hitting him like a physical blow.

"I kept everything, Adrian," Emma said quietly. "Every receipt. Every lease agreement. Every blood-soaked dollar you borrowed from my father’s hardware store to buy your first tailored suit. You thought running away to Manhattan made you a king. But kings built on stolen foundations tend to fall the hardest."

"Enough!" Margaret shrieked, her voice cracking with pain and fury as she tried to pull herself upright. She clutched her left side, her face twisting in agony. "Adrian! Get her out of my sight! Call security! Call the police! Have this... this extortionist arrested right now!"

"I wouldn't do that if I were you, Mrs. Vance," Dr. Harrison intervened sharply, stepping between Adrian and Emma. He pointed at the heart monitor, where the yellow line was beginning to spike into jagged, dangerous peaks. "Her blood pressure is through the roof. If she has another ischemic episode right now, no amount of money or federal injunctions is going to save her life. And guess who is the only certified cardiac nurse on this floor qualified to administer the emergency override?"

Adrian froze, his hand hovering mid-air. He looked at his mother, whose lips were turning slightly blue, and then back at Emma, who stood beside the emergency cart with her hand resting calmly on the defibrillator paddle release.

The power dynamic in the room shifted violently. In a matter of seconds, the billionaire CEO had been checkmated by a woman in navy blue scrubs.

"What do you want, Emma?" Adrian asked through clenched teeth, his voice a low, defeated growl.

May you like

Emma turned her gaze slowly from Adrian to Margaret, then back to the window where the rain was finally beginning to streak against the glass.

"I want five minutes alone with you, Adrian," Emma said softly. "Just the two of us. In the private consultation room down the hall. Right now."
