Chapter 7 - THE MORNING AFTER THE FALLFacebook Headline Trend: “Federal agents raid billionaire’s penthouse hours after mysterious hospital showdown!”

The morning sun broke through the heavy gray smog of the city, casting a harsh, unforgiving white light across the penthouse suite on the sixty-fifth floor of the Vance Tower.

It was 7:30 AM. But there was no coffee brewing. No assistants rushing in with tablet schedules. No quiet hum of international market reports playing in the background.

Instead, the apartment was filled with the heavy, methodical thud of heavy boots on imported Italian marble.

Federal marshals in tactical vests swept through the sprawling, minimalist living room, opening custom mahogany cabinets, seizing encrypted hard drives, and slapping confiscation seals on original artwork. At the center of the devastation stood Adrian Vance. He was still wearing the same black shirt from the hospital, now wrinkled and stained with sweat, his hair disheveled, staring blankly out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the bustling city below.

His phone buzzed incessantly on the marble island behind him—a relentless, frantic symphony of panicked board members, lawyers threatening lawsuits, and media outlets demanding statements about the sudden, catastrophic freezing of Vance Enterprises' primary assets.

Adrian didn't answer. He didn't even turn around.

The heavy oak front door pushed open, and Victoria Sterling strode into the penthouse. At thirty-two, Victoria was the epitome of aristocratic old-money elegance—sharp cheekbones, ice-blond hair pulled into a severe French twist, and a tailored white Chanel blazer that looked entirely out of place amid the federal raid.

"Adrian, what in God's name is going on?!" Victoria’s voice pierced the silence of the room, sharp and furious. She dodged a federal agent carrying a box of corporate ledger books. "My father’s legal team has been calling my phone off the hook for the last hour! The bank just rejected our corporate line of credit! The entire board is calling an emergency vote of no confidence for noon today! Are you out of your mind?!"

Adrian slowly turned around. He looked at his wife—the woman he had married for a lifeline, the woman who represented everything he had sold his soul to attain. There was no warmth in his eyes. Only a hollow, terrifying emptiness.

"It's over, Victoria," Adrian said, his voice flat, almost devoid of life.

Victoria stopped dead in her tracks, her eyes widening in disbelief. "What do you mean, it's over? You're Adrian Vance! You own half this damn coast! You can't just say 'it's over' like a bankrupt gambler!"

"I signed the confession at midnight," Adrian continued, his voice barely above a whisper. "Federal jurisdiction. Securities fraud, identity falsification, asset concealment. The entire portfolio has been seized under a federal restitution order."

Victoria’s face twisted in horror. She took a sharp step back, shaking her head violently. "You signed a confession? Have you lost your damn mind?! Who?! Who did this to you? Was it the SEC? Was it one of the board members?"

"No," Adrian said, a bitter, broken chuckle escaping his lips.

"Then who?!" Victoria screamed, losing her composure entirely as she grabbed the lapel of his wrinkled shirt. "Who could possibly have that kind of leverage over you?!"

Before Adrian could answer, the television mounted on the far wall—set to the financial news network on low volume—flashed with a breaking news banner:

BREAKING NEWS: VANCE ENTERPRISES COLLAPSES AMID FEDERAL RAID; MYSTERIOUS PHILANTHROPIC TRUST 'EMMA FOUNDATION' ASSUMES CONTROLLING ASSETS.

Victoria froze. She slowly turned her head toward the screen, then back to her husband, her face turning chalk white.

"Emma..." Victoria whispered, the name tasting foreign and dangerous on her tongue. "Who the hell is Emma?"

Adrian closed his eyes, leaning his head back against the cold glass of the penthouse window. "The nurse I left behind."
