Chapter 3 - The Bloodline ParadoxThe revelation hit the hall like a physical blow. Elena looked down at her hands, her skin turning ashen gray. The gun shook violently in her grip before slipping from her fingers and clattering loudly onto the marble floor.

"No... no, that's impossible," Elena stammered, taking a step backward, nearly tripping over her own train. "Mom... tell him he's lying! Tell me I'm a Vance!"

My mother collapsed into the nearest pew, burying her face in her hands, weeping silently. Her silence was the ultimate confirmation.

"You see," Marcus said, stepping down from the pulpit, his heavy leather shoes echoing rhythmically against the stone floor. "My brother was a brilliant strategist, but a terrible human being. He constructed a maze of lies to protect his empire from me. He knew that if I ever returned, I would claim my rightful share. So he created two decoys: an adopted daughter to act as the public face, and an illegitimate niece to hold the legal title."

He stopped five feet away from us, reaching into his coat pocket. The entire room held its breath, expecting another weapon, but Marcus pulled out a heavy, antique iron key attached to a dark velvet ribbon.

"Julian," Marcus said, turning to the groom. "You were never just a bridegroom. You were the keykeeper. Your family's security firm holds the biometric codes to the Zurich vault. But the physical key was entrusted to Liana."

Julian stared at Marcus, his jaw tightly set. "And why are you telling us this now, Marcus? Why lock us in here? Why pull off this insane stunt at a wedding?"

Marcus smiled—a cold, cruel curve of his lips. "Because the Zurich vault doesn't just contain money, Julian. It contains the hard drives with the evidence of who killed your father eight years ago."

Julian went completely rigid. The color drained from his face, replaced by a dark, dangerous fury. "What did you say?"

"Your father's death wasn't a helicopter crash, Julian," Marcus said smoothly. "It was sabotage. Ordered right from within this very family. And the person who signed off on the maintenance override... is sitting right there in the third row."

Marcus pointed his tablet toward my mother.

Julian turned slowly toward my mother. The pain and love he had carried for years instantly transformed into absolute lethality. Step by step, Julian walked down the altar steps toward my mother, his eyes locked onto her trembling frame.

"Julian, no!" I screamed, running after him and catching his arm. "Don't do this! Don't let Marcus manipulate you!"

"She killed my father, Liana!" Julian snarled, his voice breaking with immense agony. "My father died in a fireball in the Alps! I spent eight years thinking it was an engine failure!"

"He's lying to you!" my mother sobbed, clutching her string of pearls. "Julian, Marcus is setting us all up! He wants us to destroy each other so he can take the entire vault for himself!"

"She's right about one thing," Marcus interjected with a cold laugh. "I do want the vault. But I don't need to kill any of you to get it. I just need Liana to open it."

Suddenly, the heavy iron doors at the back of the cathedral were breached. The loud crunch of tearing metal echoed as a team of heavily armed men in unmarked tactical gear swept into the hall, laser sights cutting through the darkness.

"Red dots!" Julian roared, tackling me to the ground just as a hail of silenced gunfire shattered the stained-glass windows behind the altar.

Guests shrieked, crawling under wooden pews as chaos erupted. Marcus’s mercenaries moved with military precision, securing the perimeter and pushing the guests toward the exits, holding them hostage.

Julian dragged me behind the heavy marble altar, his body covering mine.

"Liana, look at me," Julian commanded, his hands cupping my face. His heart was hammering against his chest, but his eyes were laser-focused. "Look at me!"

"Julian... I'm scared," I whispered, tears finally overflowing down my cheeks.

"I know. But listen to me carefully," he said, pulling a thin silver chain from underneath his tuxedo shirt. Hanging from it was a small, intricate micro-chip key. "My father gave me this five minutes before he boarded that helicopter. He told me to give it to the girl I truly loved, when the time was right. I thought he meant Elena because my family forced the arrangement. But the moment I saw you today... I knew it was always you."

He pressed the cool metal key into my hand and folded my fingers over it.

"Whatever happens in the next five minutes, Liana... do not let Marcus get both keys."

Before I could answer, a hand grabbed Julian by his collar and yanked him backward.
