Chapter 9 - The Zurich VaultThe Swiss private banking district was quiet at 2:00 AM, covered in a light, misting fog.

The main branch of the Vance Private Trust sat like an impenetrable stone fortress in the heart of the city, its high bronze doors guarded by silent, armed private guards in formal attire.

Julian and I stepped out of a local taxi, drenched in mud, blood, and rain, looking like two ghosts who had survived hell.

The guards immediately raised their hands, but Julian tossed a black leather security badge onto the marble steps.

"Priority Alpha Override," Julian announced, his voice echoing off the stone pillars. "The Vance heirs have arrived."

The head guard picked up the badge, swiped it through a portable reader, and instantly stood at attention. "Right this way, Mr. Vance. The vault manager has been expecting you."

We were escorted down three subterranean levels beneath the city streets, passing through five thick steel security doors until we reached the central vault room.

In the center of the vast, silver-tiled room stood the legendary Vance Vault—a massive, circular door made of reinforced titanium, glowing with intricate blue biometric circuits.

The vault manager, a tall Swiss man in a sharp suit, bowed slightly. "Miss Liana, Mr. Julian. You are the first individuals to access this chamber in twenty-five years. Please insert both keys simultaneously."

Julian pulled out his micro-chip key. I pulled out mine.

We stepped up to the massive titanium door.

"Together?" I asked, looking up at Julian.

Julian looked down at me, his face bruised and bloody, but his eyes holding a love so intense it made my heart ache. "Together."

We inserted the keys into the dual slots.

INSERTION CONFIRMED. SCANNING BIOMETRICS...

A bright green laser swept across our eyes and hands.

BIOMETRICS MATCHED: LIANA VANCE & JULIAN VANCE. VAULT UNLOCKED.

With a deep, heavy metallic rumble that vibrated through the floor, the massive titanium door unlatched, slowly swinging open to reveal a brightly lit, pristine white room.

In the center of the room, resting on a glass pedestal, was not money. Not gold bars.

It was a single, ancient leather-bound journal and a high-grade military encrypted hard drive.

I stepped into the vault, my heart hammering against my ribs, and reached out to pick up the journal.

I flipped open the cover.

On the first page was a photograph of a beautiful woman with deep, dark eyes—eyes that matched mine exactly.

Below the photo was my father's handwriting:

"To my beloved daughter, Liana. If you are reading this, I am dead, and the empire I built has collapsed. I know you spent your life believing I didn't love you. I know you thought Elena was the favored child. But everything I did was to ensure you would survive the shadow of Marcus and your mother."

Tears blurred my vision as I read the next lines.

"Your mother... was not my wife. Your mother was Julian's father's sister. You and Julian are not blood relatives, but your families were bound by a sacred promise. You were never a decoy, Liana. You were the reason I kept fighting."

I gasped, clutching my chest.

"Julian..." I whispered, turning around with the journal in my hands. "Look at this..."

Julian stepped into the room, reading over my shoulder. His eyes widened in absolute astonishment. "My aunt... my father's sister was your biological mother?"

"That means..." I stammered, "that means our parents didn't set up an arrangement for money... they set it up to unite the two families against Marcus!"

"Correct," a voice echoed from the vault entrance.

May you like

We turned around abruptly.

Standing at the threshold of the open vault, holding a silenced pistol, was my mother.
