Chapter 4 - The Vault of Secrets"Julian!" I screamed, reaching out, but a mercenary slammed a heavy tactical boot right beside my head, pinning me to the floor.

Marcus stepped over the marble altar, looking down at me with an eerie calmness while two of his men dragged Julian away, forcing him onto his knees near the shattered pulpit.

"Bring her up," Marcus ordered coldly.

The mercenary hauled me up by my arm, forcing me to stand beside Elena, who was shivering violently on the ground, clutching her ruined wedding dress, her mind completely shattered by the revelation that her entire life was a lie.

"You have five minutes, Liana," Marcus said, placing a heavy steel briefcase onto the altar. He flipped the latches open, revealing a portable biometric vault interface wired with satellite relays. "Insert the chip Julian just gave you, and place your thumb on the scanner."

"No," I said, staring him dead in the eye, despite the barrel of a rifle aimed directly at my chest. "You killed Julian's father, didn't you? You framed my mother, locked us in here, and destroyed this family."

Marcus chuckled softly, reaching out to gently touch the blood-red rose pinned to his lapel. "Your father was a hypocrite, Liana. He paraded around as a philanthropist while stealing my shares, stealing my life, and keeping your mother tied to a lie. I didn't kill Julian's father. Your father did. And your mother helped him cover it up."

I turned my head toward my mother. She was kneeling on the floor, surrounded by armed guards, her head bowed in profound shame. She didn't deny it.

"Mom..." I whispered, the word tasting like ash in my mouth. "Is it true?"

"We had no choice, Liana!" my mother cried out, her voice trembling with decades of suppressed terror. "Julian's father was going to go to the federal authorities! He found out your father was laundering money through the Vance Foundation! If he spoke, our entire family would have spent the rest of their lives in prison! You would have grown up in an orphanage!"

"So you murdered him?!" Julian roared from across the altar, straining against the two mercenaries holding him down, his knuckles bleeding. "You murdered my father to save your precious reputation?!"

"It wasn't about reputation!" my mother shrieked. "It was about you, Liana! Your father wanted to protect you!"

"Stop the theatricals!" Marcus shouted, his voice snapping across the cathedral like a whip. He grabbed my wrist, dragging my hand violently toward the interface screen. "Insert the key, Liana! Or I put a bullet through Julian's head right now!"

A mercenary immediately pulled a handgun, pressing the cold barrel directly against the side of Julian's forehead.

Julian looked up at me, his eyes fierce and unyielding. "Don't do it, Liana! Don't give him what he wants!"

"Shut up!" the mercenary growled, pistol-whipping Julian across the temple. Julian slumped forward, blood dripping down his cheek onto the white marble floor.

"Julian!" I screamed.

My heart felt like it was tearing apart. Every instinct in my body was screaming at me to fight, but seeing Julian's blood pool on the floor shattered my resolve.

"Okay! Okay! Stop!" I cried, my voice breaking into jagged sobs. "I'll do it! Just don't hurt him!"

I held out my trembling hand, bringing the micro-chip key toward the briefcase interface.

"Liana... don't..." Elena suddenly whispered from the floor, her voice barely audible. She was looking up at the projection screen, which was still displaying the legal documents of the Vance Trust. "Look at the bottom of the deed... look at the second condition..."

I paused, my fingers inches from the interface slot. My eyes flicked up to the massive screen hanging high above the cathedral aisle.

At the very bottom of the contract, written in tiny, precise legal print, was a clause Marcus hadn't mentioned:

Clause 14-B: The unlocking of the Zurich Vault using the primary biometric interface will automatically execute a 60-second thermite detonation protocol within the vault's physical location, destroying all physical records, unless activated simultaneously with the voice print of the true heir.

Marcus didn't want the evidence to bring justice. He wanted to destroy the evidence so he could claim the offshore cash reserves without ever being prosecuted for his past crimes.

He wasn't trying to expose the truth. He was executing a cleanup operation.

I looked back at Marcus. A sinister realization washed over me.

"You don't want the hard drives," I said softly. "You want to burn them."

Marcus's eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. "You're too smart for your own good, Liana. Just like your father."

He raised his own gun and pointed it straight between my eyes.

"Insert the key. Now."
