CHAPTER 7 — "The Billionaire's Secret Changed Everything We Thought We Knew"

I barely slept that night.
Detective Harper's final sentence kept echoing in my head.
"He's Sophie's biological grandfather."
It couldn't be true.
Sophie's biological father, Ryan, had died in a car accident before she was born. At least, that's what everyone had always believed.
The next morning, Harper asked me to meet him at the state investigation office.
On the conference table sat a thick file stamped CONFIDENTIAL.
Harper slid it toward me.
"You deserve the truth."
Inside were adoption records, financial statements, and an old photograph of Ryan standing beside a distinguished older man in a tailored navy suit.
The man was Victor Ashford—a billionaire industrialist known across the state for his charitable foundations and powerful business empire.
"What does he have to do with Ryan?" I asked.
Harper took a deep breath.
"Victor wasn't just Ryan's employer."
"He was his father."
I stared at him.
"Ryan never told me he came from money."
"He wasn't allowed to."
According to the investigation, Ryan had walked away from his family's fortune years earlier after refusing to join the family's business.
He wanted an ordinary life.
He chose love over wealth.
He chose me.
When Ryan died, Victor blamed himself for driving his son away.
But before he could reach out...
Someone intercepted every letter he sent.
Every birthday card.
Every attempt to contact me.
Someone made sure we never knew the truth.
"Who?" I whispered.
Harper looked toward the evidence board.
"Ethan."
The room fell silent.
Ethan had secretly forged documents, redirected mail, and convinced Victor that I wanted nothing to do with the Ashford family.
For years, Victor believed I hated him.
And I believed he had abandoned us.
One lie had stolen an entire family.
Before I could process everything, Harper's phone rang.
His expression hardened.
"We've got movement."
"What happened?"
"Ethan just requested an emergency meeting with prosecutors."
I frowned.
"Why?"
Harper didn't answer immediately.
Finally, he said quietly,
"Because he's offering to expose someone even bigger."
The interrogation began that afternoon.
Ethan sat across from detectives, no longer wearing the confidence he once hid behind.
"I wasn't working alone," he admitted.
Everyone in the room leaned forward.
"There was someone paying me."
Harper folded his arms.
"Who?"
Ethan smiled weakly.
"You already know his name."
He slid a folded piece of paper across the table.
Harper opened it.
His eyes widened.
"No..."
On the paper was a single name.
Not Victor Ashford.
Someone else.
Someone Harper had worked beside for nearly twelve years.
Captain Michael Reynolds.
The head of the Child Protection Task Force.
The very man who had supervised several of Ethan's earlier investigations.
