CHAPTER 9 — "The Final Recording Exposed the Monster Behind Everything"

The courthouse was surrounded by reporters before sunrise.
No one was talking about Ethan anymore.
Every headline asked the same question:
Who was really behind Project Sparrow?
Detective Harper barely slept.
Neither did I.
At 5:47 a.m., my phone rang.
"We found it," Harper said.
"The missing server."
Within an hour I was standing inside a federal evidence warehouse.
Technicians surrounded a steel cabinet that had been recovered from an abandoned storage facility registered under a fake company.
Inside sat several encrypted hard drives.
One by one...
They came to life.
Thousands of files appeared on the screens.
Financial records.
Medical reports.
Deleted emails.
Hidden surveillance videos.
Everything pointed to one conclusion.
Project Sparrow had been built to silence abuse complaints, manipulate insurance claims, and protect influential people from criminal investigations.
Ethan had been recruited because he was willing to hurt children without showing remorse.
But someone else had designed the entire system.
Then one technician froze.
"I found a recording."
Harper hurried over.
The timestamp was nearly seven years old.
The video began in a dimly lit office.
Captain Reynolds entered first.
A second man followed.
When his face came into view, everyone in the room stopped breathing.
It was District Attorney Charles Whitmore.
The same prosecutor who had spent years appearing on television promising to protect children.
In the recording, Reynolds slid a stack of files across the desk.
Whitmore looked at them for only a few seconds before saying,
"Close every one of them."
Reynolds hesitated.
"There are children involved."
Whitmore didn't even look up.
"There are donors involved."
The room fell silent.
The recording continued.
"If one family has to suffer to protect a hundred-million-dollar partnership..."
Whitmore calmly said,
"...that's simply the cost of doing business."
Harper shut off the video.
No one spoke.
One investigator quietly whispered,
"My God..."
Within two hours, federal agents arrested Whitmore in his downtown office.
Television helicopters followed the convoy as he was escorted out in handcuffs.
Watching it on the news, I finally realized Ethan had never been the leader.
He had been the weapon.
Someone else had been pulling the trigger.
But Harper wasn't celebrating.
He looked at me and said quietly,
"We've arrested everyone we know."
He paused.
"But someone warned them before we got there."
"There's still one person we haven't found."
Before I could ask who...
His phone vibrated.
He stared at the message.
His face turned pale.
"The witness..."
He whispered.
May you like
"Rebecca is gone."
The room suddenly felt ice cold.
