Chapter 3 - The Unraveling at Table Four"Stolen?"

My mother’s voice cut through the stunned silence like a shattered wine glass. Lynette pushed back her chair so hard it screeched against the floor, marching over to where her husband stood facing the hotel manager and the police.

"What ridiculous nonsense are you spewing?" Lynette demanded, her eyes flashing with fury. "Marin is our daughter! She authorized this account months ago! Richard, tell them! Show them the paperwork!"

Richard’s face, previously flushed with pride, turned an ashen, pasty gray. He reached instinctively into his inner tuxedo pocket, pulling out a folded stack of papers. His hands were trembling.

"There must be a mistake," Richard stammered, his booming confidence evaporating into thin air. He looked at the two police officers. "Officers, there’s been a clerical error. Marin is... she’s busy with her job, she gets confused by corporate billing codes sometimes, she probably panicked when she saw the total pending charges..."

"Mr. Whitlock," the lead officer interrupted, stepping forward. His hand rested casually on his utility belt. "We just spoke via secure dispatch with the fraud division at Front Range Federal. The account holder, Marin Whitlock, is currently at her office in downtown Denver. She explicitly stated she never authorized these transactions, never signed any billing waivers, and was never invited to this event."

The words dropped like lead weights into the center of the ballroom.

Grant Mercer, the groom, stood up from the head table, his face turning a deep, angry crimson. He looked at Coralie, then at my father.

"Wait a minute," Grant said, his voice rising in panic. "What do you mean she wasn't invited? Richard, you told me all of Coralie's family expenses, including the catering and the venue, were being covered by her sister as a wedding endowment! You said Marin insisted on paying for everything!"

Coralie burst into tears, her mascara instantly running down her cheeks. "Grant, stop it! Don't look at me like that! We just wanted a nice wedding! You know my family doesn't have this kind of money! If we didn't use Marin’s card, we would have had to elope in a backyard!"

"You lied to me?" Grant stared at his new bride in absolute horror. "You funded our entire wedding using someone else's credit card without their permission? That's not a gift, Coralie! That's identity theft!"

"It's not theft if it's family!" Lynette shrieked, losing all composure as she rushed to her younger daughter's defense, screaming at the entire room. "Marin has millions of dollars sitting in her tech accounts! She lives alone in a luxury high-rise! She didn't need that money! We are her family! Everything she has belongs to us!"

The guests began whispering frantically, pulling out their phones, whispering behind cupped hands, and quietly gathering their coats. The magical, fairy-tale wedding had transformed into a public crime scene in less than five minutes.
