Chapter 8 - The Confrontation at the PrecinctBy Monday morning, the Denver County Courthouse was buzzing with activity.

I sat on a wooden bench outside holding the manila envelope Grant had given me. My hands weren't shaking anymore. They were ice cold, steady, and resolute.

The courtroom doors swung open, and my parents were led out by a bailiff.

Richard looked ten years older than he had on Friday night. His suit was wrinkled, his hair uncombed, and his shoulders were hunched in defeat. Lynette walked beside him, her face hardened with bitter resentment. When she saw me sitting on the bench, her eyes flared with pure venom.

"Are you happy now?" Lynette hissed as the bailiff guided them past me down the corridor. "You’re putting your own father in prison over a few financial misunderstandings! You’ve destroyed our family!"

"You destroyed this family the moment you decided I wasn't a daughter, but a resource to be exploited," I replied, standing up to block their path.

I pulled the second set of mortgage fraud documents out of the envelope and held them up in front of my father’s face.

Richard stopped dead in his tracks. He stared at the papers, and the last shred of color drained entirely from his cheeks.

"Where... where did you get that?" he whispered, his voice trembling.

"Grant gave it to me," I said evenly. "One hundred and fifty thousand dollars against my condo. Fraudulent mortgage leveraging. Combined with the wedding theft, you’re looking at federal wire fraud and identity theft charges that carry a minimum of ten years."

Lynette gasped, grabbing onto Richard’s arm. "Richard, tell her she’s lying! Tell her she can't do this!"

May you like

"She can," Richard whispered, his eyes filling with sudden, pathetic tears. He looked up at me, his voice breaking. "Marin... please. I’m your father. We raised you. We fed you."

"You didn't raise me, Dad," I said quietly, looking down at the man who had taught me how to balance a checkbook while secretly stealing mine. "You managed me. And business hours are officially closed."
