Chapter 10 - A New EmpireI opened the document, sliding my finger across the crisp, embossed seal of the court.

There was no sadness left in my chest. Only a profound, liberating stillness.

For years, I had believed that building a successful life meant balancing two worlds—my relentless corporate ambition and the fragile, high-maintenance illusion of a happy suburban marriage. I had spent countless hours smoothing over Sebastian’s insecurities, funding his failed ventures, and pretending that his lack of drive was just a harmless quirk of personality.

I had been wrong. True strength wasn't about holding broken pieces together; it was about having the courage to let them shatter so you could build something unbreakable in their place.

"Are you attending the gala tonight, Victoria?" Elena asked softly, pausing by the door. "The board of directors is expecting your keynote address for the Q3 expansion."

I looked up from the divorce decree, gazing past the floor-to-ceiling glass windows at the sprawling, magnificent city below. Carter Holdings was stronger, richer, and more secure than it had ever been in its history. Every asset was mine. Every victory was earned. Every future was entirely under my control.

"Tell the board to save their champagne," I said, a slow, radiant smile spreading across my lips. "We aren't just expanding into Q3. We're launching a complete global acquisition. And I'm writing the rules from scratch."

Elena smiled, nodded once, and closed the office door behind her.

I picked up my pen, signed my name at the bottom of the final corporate restructuring document, and watched the Chicago sun rise higher into the sky. Sebastian had wanted a real woman to build his dream life for him.

He just forgot that I was the one who owned the foundation.
