The kitchen floor was clean of flour, though a small bag of it sat proudly on the counter, reserved for special weekend sensory play sessions.
I stood by the glass railing, holding a steaming cup of black coffee, watching through the sliding glass door as Alex and Elizabeth chased each other around the living room, laughing uncontrollably as flour dust drifted through the air like magical snow.
Elizabeth caught Alex in her arms, spinning him around in a circle as he shrieked with absolute joy. She looked up, catching my gaze through the glass, and smiled—a genuine, warm, beautiful smile that erased six years of hatred and vengeance.
