Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the HallwayThe silence that followed was heavier than any gunfire I had ever faced.

My mind raced backward through time, violently tearing apart the narrative I had built to survive the last nine weeks. I had blamed myself. I had blamed the stress of the syndicate, the cruel hand of fate, the grief that swallows men whole. I had spent millions on top-tier child psychologists who diagnosed Alex with acute selective mutism brought on by traumatic shock.

None of them knew. None of them could know.

"If Marcus did this," I said slowly, every word tasting like ground glass, "why didn't you kill him? Why come here? Why play housekeeper for three weeks?"

Elizabeth gently carried sleeping Alex toward the hallway leading to the bedrooms, whispering for me to follow without making a sound. We crept down the dark corridor until we reached Alex's nursery. She carefully laid him down in his toddler bed, pulling the dinosaur-printed blanket up to his chin. He let out a soft sigh, his small chest rising and falling in deep, peaceful sleep.

Only when we stepped back out into the hallway and pulled the door half-closed did Elizabeth turn back to face me.

"Because killing Marcus too quickly would be a mercy," she whispered fiercely, her fingernails digging slightly into her palms. "And because Marcus didn't act alone, Andrew."

My eyes narrowed. "Go on."

"Marcus is just a dog on a short leash," Elizabeth said, leaning against the dark wallpaper. "Who do you think authorized the hit on Emma while you were out of town in Chicago six years ago? Who do you think stands to inherit the entire James syndicate if you and your bloodline are wiped out?"

I didn't need to ask. The answer was already forming in the darkest corners of my mind, disgusting and undeniable.

"Vincent," I murmured, the name of my own cousin and syndicate treasurer slipping past my lips like a death sentence.

"Vincent has been quietly buying out your board members, restructuring your offshore accounts, and positioning himself to take over the throne the moment you finally cracked under the weight of your grief," Elizabeth revealed. "He thought he had won. He thought by breaking your son's spirit and keeping him mute, Alex could never testify or remember what he saw in the study that morning."

"And you?" I asked, studying her face in the dim amber light of the hallway sconce. "How do you fit into Vincent's grand design?"

"I don't," she replied coldly. "I'm the loose end he forgot to tie up six years ago. When Julian was exiled, Vincent tried to have me killed too. I went underground. I watched, I waited, and I built a dossier that would tear your entire criminal empire apart from the roots up. But I realized something when I got close to you, Andrew."

"What?"

"You didn't know," she whispered, her voice softening just a fraction, losing its razor edge. "You loved Emma just as much as I did. You were just too blind, too arrogant, and too busy playing king of New York to see the snakes nesting in your own royal court."

I looked down at my hands. They were strong hands. Hands that could break a man's neck with a single twist, hands that controlled billions in illicit capital and real estate across the tri-state area. But they were empty. They couldn't save my wife, and they damn near destroyed my son.

"What's your play, Elizabeth?" I asked, my voice steadying. "You have the dossier. You have the access. Why not just hand it to the FBI and watch my world collapse?"

"Because the FBI can't touch Vincent the way he deserves to be touched," she replied, her eyes narrowing into dangerous slits. "Vincent is meeting with your board tomorrow morning at dawn in the downtown penthouse tower to ratify the complete takeover of your assets. He thinks you're still stranded in Chicago due to the storm."

I checked my watch. It was 3:15 AM. Dawn was less than three hours away.

"And by tomorrow night," I said, a dark, dangerous smile slowly spreading across my face, "Vincent is going to find out that the king is home."
