Chapter 9 - The Return to the PenthouseThe private elevator ride back up to the penthouse felt entirely different from the descent hours earlier. The air was calm, steady, and clean.

When the doors slid open, the penthouse was quiet, save for the faint sound of a cartoon playing softly from the television in the living room.

We rushed down the hallway and pushed open the door to the nursery.

Alex was sitting up in his bed, wrapped tightly in his dinosaur pajamas, happily munching on a piece of toast with strawberry jam that a trusted guard must have brought up from the kitchen.

When he heard our footsteps, his head snapped around.

For a second, my heart stopped, fearing he might shrink back into that frightened, silent shell.

Instead, a bright, radiant smile broke across his small face—a smile I hadn't seen in nine endless, agonizing weeks. He pointed a sticky finger straight at Elizabeth, and then pointed at me.

"Together," he said clearly, his voice ringing through the quiet room like music.

Elizabeth gasped, a single tear escaping her eye as she covered her mouth with her hand. My own knees buckled slightly, but this time, I didn't fall from rage or sorrow. I dropped down to the floor right beside his bed, wrapping both arms around my son and pulling him into a fierce, unbreakable embrace.

Elizabeth knelt beside us, her arms wrapping around both of us, sealing the broken pieces of our lives back together into something new, resilient, and whole.
