Chapter 1 - The Blood on the Marble

The silence in the grand foyer of the Vance estate was suffocating. The foam pillow lay on the polished Italian marble like a severed head, a grotesque monument to a monstrous deception.
Richard Vance stood frozen. His hands, which had been raised to strike his own daughter, Clara, shook violently. The protective fury in his eyes dissolved into a sickening, hollow vacuum. He looked at the pillow, then at Elena, his wife of three years. Elena was on her knees, her designer dress torn, her flat stomach exposed to the glaring chandelier light. The "pregnancy" that had saved her from a divorce just three months ago was nothing but mesh, straps, and cotton padding.
"Richard... Richard, please, let me explain," Elena gasped, her voice losing its sweet, melodic cadence, replaced by a desperate, raspy screech. She reached for his tailored trousers, her manicured nails clawing at the fabric. "I did it for us! I did it to save our family!"
"To save your lifestyle, you mean," Clara spat, stepping over the fake belly. Her face was stained with tears, but her eyes held the cold triumph of a executioner. "You didn't want a baby, Elena. You wanted a shield. Because you knew the moment my father looked into the offshore accounts, he’d find out you’ve been bleeding Vance Enterprises dry to pay off your gambling debts—and your lover."
Richard’s head snapped toward his daughter. "What did you say?" his voice was a dangerous, low growl, the rumble of a dying volcano. "What lover?"
Elena’s face drained of what little color it had left. "Clara is lying! She hates me! She’s always hated me since the day I married you! She’s trying to destroy us!"

Clara didn’t argue. Instead, she reached into her blazer pocket and pulled out a sleek silver flash drive. She tossed it onto the marble floor. It skittered across the polished surface, stopping right in front of Richard’s leather shoes.
"See for yourself, Dad," Clara whispered, her voice cracking with a mixture of pain and satisfaction. "The baby wasn't yours. But the betrayal? That belongs entirely to the man you call your brother."
