Chapter 5 - THE EMBEZZLEMENT TRAILI unlatched the crimson folder, sliding out a thick stack of certified financial statements, wire-transfer logs, and military procurement sign-offs.

“Captain Sarah Vey,” I announced, my voice ringing clear and steady across the silent hall. “Investigative Auditor assigned to the Department of Defense Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction and Domestic Logistics Fraud.”

The room erupted into sudden, chaotic murmurs.

Caleb’s face drained of color so fast he looked like a corpse under fluorescent lights. He had known me as his wife—a logistical analyst who deployed overseas, a quiet woman he could dismiss, ignore, and cheat on while I was dodging mortar rounds in the desert.

He had completely forgotten that my primary military occupational specialty before I ever put on an officer’s bars was military forensic accounting and counter-intelligence finance tracking.

“For the past three years,” I continued, stepping out from the scattered remnants of the dinner plate, “while Colonel Mercer was stationed at the Pentagon overseeing regional supply distribution, a private shell corporation named Mercer Logistics & Solutions received over four million dollars in ghost-contract allocations for non-existent vehicle parts and medical supplies sent to forward operating bases.”

I looked directly at Caleb.

“The primary beneficiary, corporate signer, and sole authorized account holder of Mercer Logistics is Caleb Mercer. My husband.”
