Chapter 7 - THE COLONEL’S CONFESSIONColonel Grant Mercer stepped up to the microphone stand, tapping the metal neck until the feedback shrieked through the speakers, commanding absolute silence.

“Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests, comrades,” Grant began, his voice shaking slightly with raw emotion. “For thirty-six years, I wore this uniform with pride. I believed that honor meant protecting our nation abroad and upholding our values at home. But I failed in the most important mission of my life: I raised a coward, and I married an accomplice.”

Grant turned his tired, aging eyes toward his wife and son.

“When I discovered six months ago that my son was using my military office security codes to siphon classified logistics contracts into his private slush fund, I didn't cover it up. I didn't protect the family name. I went directly to the Inspector General’s office.”

Grant pointed a shaking finger directly at me.

“I requested the best financial investigator in the United States Army to audit my own family. I asked Captain Sarah Vey to look into every bank account, every overseas wire, and every shell corporation bearing the Mercer name.”

Grant saluted me once more.

“She didn't just find the corruption. She mapped the entire syndicate.”
