Chapter 6 - THE HUSBAND’S BETRAYAL“It’s a lie!” Caleb screamed, lunging around the table, his arms outstretched as if he wanted to tear the folder right out of my hands.

Before he could take two steps, one of the Military Police investigators crossed the room with terrifying speed, grabbing Caleb by his expensive silk lapels and slamming him down hard onto the empty metal chair.
“Stay seated, sir,” the MP barked, his voice dropping into a lethal, low register.
Caleb squirmed, gasping for breath, looking desperately toward his mother. “Mom! Do something! She’s insane! She’s doing this because I asked for a divorce last week!”
I paused, looking down at Caleb with a cold, pitying stare.
“You asked for a divorce on Tuesday, Caleb,” I said quietly. “Because your mistress—the daughter of the defense contractor who funneled those kickbacks—is pregnant, and you needed to liquidate my personal survivor-benefit trust to pay off your gambling debts before the federal audit hit.”

Vivienne clutched her chest, her knees buckling as she slid down the wall until she was sitting on the carpet near the scattered green beans, her immaculate evening gown ruined by her own panic.
