Chapter 8 - THE FEDERAL WARRANTSI closed the crimson folder and slid it back into my breast pocket.

“Caleb Mercer,” I said, looking down at my husband as he shook with impotent rage in his chair. “You are formally charged under Title 18 of the U.S. Code for federal procurement fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to defraud the United States military, and misuse of classified government communication systems.”
The MP investigator beside Caleb snapped a pair of heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists with a sharp, metallic click.
Caleb let out a humiliated, ragged sob as he was hauled straight out of his chair, his custom Italian leather shoes dragging across the mashed potatoes his mother had knocked to the floor an hour earlier.
I turned my gaze toward Vivienne, who was still weeping pathetically on the floor against the cherry-wood wall, her pearl earrings dangling crookedly.
“As for the family estate, the bank accounts, and the retirement pension fund,” I added calmly, “federal asset forfeiture warrants have already been executed tonight. By sunrise tomorrow, every single asset tied to Mercer Logistics will be seized by the Department of the Treasury.”

Vivienne looked up, her face twisted in absolute hatred. “You ruined us! You ungrateful, miserable little—after everything we gave you, you destroyed our family!”
“You didn't give me anything, Vivienne,” I replied, my voice hard as granite. “I earned every rank, every medal, and every inch of my uniform. You just provided the evidence.”
