Chapter 6 - The Forensic Audit — "The Seven Stolen Cargo Ships and the Shari'ah Compliance Fraud!"

On Monday morning, the sky over Seattle was a dark, bruised grey. As Grandfather Theodore had promised, a team of twelve federal forensic auditors and corporate investigators arrived at the Adams Maritime headquarters on the waterfront.

Because I held the master proxy power of attorney granted by my grandfather, I led the team into the executive suite. My father, Charles, was sitting behind his grand mahogany desk, a half-empty bottle of bourbon beside his keyboard, his eyes fixed on the gray water outside.

"Samantha," he said hoarsely, not looking at me. "Your grandfather is going to destroy everything I spent thirty years building."

"You didn't build this, Dad. Grandfather built it," I replied, signaling the auditors to begin pulling the physical hard drives from the server room. "You just spent thirty years pretending you were the one steering the ship."

By 2:00 PM, the lead investigator, a sharp woman named Agent Miller, walked into the office holding a stack of shipping manifests.

"Ms. Adams," Agent Miller said, looking directly at me. "We found the core discrepancy. It’s not just the twelve million dollars sent to the bride’s shell company. Your father has been falsifying cargo manifests for the past three years."

"Falsifying them how?"

"Seven of the largest container vessels in the Adams fleet don't exist anymore," Miller revealed, dropping the documents onto the desk. "He sold them to an international maritime conglomerate registered in Dubai three years ago to pay off his personal gambling debts and bad real estate options. But he kept them on the company logs, leasing them back through a secondary compliance loop, using fake maintenance records to pull money out of the corporate tax write-offs."

I turned to my father, horror finally breaking through my cold exterior. "You sold the fleet? The core assets of the family business?"

Charles didn't answer. He simply took another slow sip of his bourbon.

"The total fraud extends past fifty million dollars, Ms. Adams," Agent Miller stated grimly. "The Maritime Board will suspend all trading operations by midnight. Adams Maritime is officially bankrupt. And your father is looking at twenty years in a federal penitentiary."

The door to the office burst open. My mother, Beverly, walked in, flanked by two private security guards she had hired using her personal diamond collection as collateral.

"Stop this immediately!" she screamed at the auditors. "Get your hands off those computers! Charles, tell them to leave! I have a meeting with the bank president in one hour!"

"The bank president isn't coming, Beverly," Grandfather Theodore’s voice boomed from the doorway. He walked in slowly, leaning on his cane, but his posture was straight as a flagpole. "Because I just bought the bank's primary debt note on this building. I own the mortgage to your estate, Beverly. And I am calling the loan due immediately."
