CHAPTER 1 — THE PRISON YARD FELL SILENT

The moment Vanessa grabbed the white sneaker...
A loud CLICK echoed across the prison yard.
No one understood what had happened.
Vanessa suddenly screamed.
Not from pain.
From shock.
Kate hadn't punched her.
She hadn't kicked her.
Instead, with one impossibly fast movement, Kate had twisted Vanessa's wrist, locked her elbow behind her back, and forced the enormous woman onto her knees before anyone could even blink.
The entire yard froze.
Even the correctional officers stopped walking.
Vanessa—the woman who had ruled Cell Block C for nearly four years—was kneeling in the dirt.
Impossible.
No inmate had ever done that.
Not once.
Vanessa growled through clenched teeth.
"You little—"
Kate tightened the hold just enough to make the giant inmate gasp.
"I said no."
Her voice remained calm.
No anger.
No fear.
Only certainty.
The silence became terrifying.
Several women secretly lowered the phones they had been using to record Vanessa humiliating another newcomer.
Now they were recording history.
Vanessa tried using brute strength.
She outweighed Kate by almost eighty pounds.
She threw her body backward.
Kate simply shifted her weight.
Vanessa crashed face-first into the ground.
Dust exploded across the yard.
Someone whispered,
"...Who is she?"
The guards rushed forward.
"Break it up!"
Kate immediately released Vanessa and stepped backward with her hands raised.
She looked perfectly calm.
Almost respectful.
Vanessa slowly stood, her face burning with humiliation.
Blood dripped from her lip.
The inmates had never seen her lose.
Not ever.
She pointed at Kate.
"This isn't over."
Kate simply replied,
"I know."
The recreation period ended.
But inside the prison...
Everyone suddenly wanted to know one thing.
Who exactly had just arrived?
That evening the rumors spread through every block.
Some claimed Kate had been military.
Others insisted she had worked as a bodyguard.
Someone even swore she had once fought professionally.
No one knew.
Because Kate never answered questions.
She quietly ate dinner.
Read an old paperback novel.
Made her bed.
Then went to sleep.
Meanwhile...
Vanessa was doing something far more dangerous.
She was planning revenge.
She gathered seven loyal inmates inside the laundry room.
"No one embarrasses me."
Her eyes burned with hatred.
"Tomorrow...
...we end her."
None of them noticed one correctional officer standing outside the door...
Quietly listening.
And making a phone call.
A phone call that would change everything.
Because somewhere far away...
Someone very powerful had just been informed.
"She's been found."
And the answer came immediately.
May you like
"Protect her.
Whatever it takes."
